I. FINDING MATERIALS
IN THE LIBRARY
The NDSU Libraries utilize several classification
systems: Periodicals are classified in the Dewey Decimal system,
and books are classified using the Library of Congress (LC) system.
All library materials may be located using the MSUS/PALS
online catalog. MSUS/PALS is available from public access terminals
in the Libraries; from personal computers on campus using modems
or campus networks; and from off-campus personal computers equipped
with a modem. Guides to the use and contents of the catalog are
available in the Main Library. Please consult these guides or a
librarian if you need information about using MSUS/PALS.
PALS can also be accessed through WebPals
or by telnet (pals.msus.edu).
Use the volumes entitled Library of Congress Subject
Headings, located near the reference desk in the Main Library,
or use "file LCA" in PALS to find the correct subject
entries to use in MSUS/PALS. Standard subdivisions may be used following
most subject headings, e.g. CHEMISTRY--DICTIONARIES or THERMODYNAMICS--TABLES,
CALCULATIONS, ETC..
To find periodical classification numbers, locations,
and holdings, consult the CAT or the MULS file on MSUS/PALS.
Professional librarians knowledgeable in the subject
collections in the library are available to assist you during most
of the hours the Libraries are open. Library subject specialists
are also available by appointment to provide in-depth assistance
in locating and using information resources in specific subject
areas. Using their knowledge and experience in searching bibliographic
indexes and databases, they can also help you identify and obtain
material not owned by the University.
Many of the materials dealing with chemistry will
be found in the QD and TP sections of the library in the Library
of Congress Classification System. Other LC call numbers to use
include QC, TA, and TN. In the Dewey Decimal Classification System,
you will find most chemistry periodicals in the 540's and 660's.
See the Dewey and LC classification schedules at the reference desk
in the Main Library for further classification breakdowns. The following
guide may he helpful to you as you browse in the collections.
- Q General Science

II. GUIDES TO THE LITERATURE AND RESEARCH HELPS
Return to Top
Guides to the literature help the researcher determine
what bibliographies, indexes, directories, periodicals, dictionaries,
and other reference works pertain to a particular subject. Consulting
a librarian and using these and similar works early in a research
project can usually save you hours of research time. You may locate
additional guides by searching on the subject headings "CHEMISTRY-BIBLIOGRAPHY"
or "CHEMICAL LITERATURE " in MSUS/pals.

VII. STANDARDS AND SPECIFICATIONS
While we are fortunate to have several approaches
to locating standards and specifications today, identifying and
obtaining a needed standard or specification can often involve a
fairly complex literature search. Global Engineering, a subsidiary
of Information Handling Services, is one well-known example of a
private, fee-based, document delivery service specializing in providing
copies of standards and specifications to organizations and individuals.
The National Center for Standards and Certification Information
acts as an information and referral center for standards-related
information in the United States. The NCSCI will respond to inquiries
on the existence, source and availability of standards and related
documents, but they will not provide copies of standards or specifications.
Most U.S. government specifications and standards
can be ordered from the address below. The charge for federal specifications
and standards varies from document to document, and the requester
has the option of having them delivered via regular 1st class U.S.
Mail or Overnight Federal Express. The requester pays the postage
charges.
General Services Administration
Specifications Section
Room 6654
7th and D Street, S.W.
Washington, D.C. 20407
(202) 472-2140
Military specifications and standards, as well
as other federal specifications and standards, can be ordered from:
Naval Publications and Forms Center
Code 106
5801 Tabor Avenue
Philadelphia, PA 19120
(215) 617-2179
As mentioned above, the private firm Global Engineering
(1-800-854-7179) sells copies of many industry, federal, military
and international standards and specifications. Global requires the
requester to pay for the standard or specification, pay a handling
fee, and the postage charges. Global will send owned documents via
the U.S. Mail, UPS, or Federal Express.
Because standards and specifications are so frequently
updated and so numerous, they are not all collected by the NDSU
Libraries. The NDSU Main Library collects the American Society for
Testing and Materials Annual Book of ASTM Standards, and many current
ANSI standards. The following indexes and reference sources may
be helpful in identifying standards and specifications produced
by other standards producing organizations. The standard producing
organization or the suppliers listed above can then be contacted
to provide the standard desired. The Index and Directory of Industry
Standards (Ref. T59.2.U6 I5) provides access to the majority
of current industry and professional association standards and provide
the addresses and phone numbers of most standards preparing organizations.
Other organizations addresses and phone numbers can be obtained
from the many directories held by the library.
Military and U.S. Federal Specifications
and Standards are indexed in the following:
U.S. Department of Defense. Department of Defense
Index of Specifications and Standards. Washington: Government
Printing Office. (D 7.14: )
General Services Administration. Index of Federal
Specifications, Standards and Commercial Item Descriptions. Washington:
Government Printing Office. (GS 2.8/2: ).
Computer-Searchable Databases
Major indexes to standards and specifications literature
are also available as fee-based online databases through the NDSU
Libraries.
STANDARDS AND SPECIFICATIONS
Producer: National Standards Association, Inc.
Content: Contains citations to over 112,000 standards produced in
the U.S. and internationally, including more than 60,000 U.S. government
standards and specifications.
IHS INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS AND SPECIFICATIONS
Producer: Information Handling Services
Content: Contains more than 200,000 references to industry, federal,
and military standards produced by more than 70 domestic, foreign,
and international organizations.
The library holds a few separate standards.
These can typically be located by checking in MSUS/PALS under the
title of the standard or under the subject heading appropriate for
the standard sought and the subheading "standards".
VIII. DISSERTATIONS AND THESES
Dissertations and theses have two features which
are valuable to those doing research: (1) since they are required
to be unique, they often deal with topics which are on the leading
edge of progress; and (2) they generally have fairly extensive bibliographies.
The following list of directional sources will help you find theses
and dissertations on your topic. You will find dissertations and
theses completed at NDSU in MSUS/PALS under the paper's author,
subject, or title. Search "te 'department name' thes#"
in MSUS/PALS for theses and dissertations from specific academic
departments at NDSU. NDSU has few these which were completed at
other institutions; many more are available through interlibrary
loan or are available for purchase through University Microfilms
International. The Reference Desk or the Interlibrary Loan Office
in the Main Library can help you locate and request these items.
Comprehensive Dissertation Index. 1861+.
Annual. The best printed index to doctoral dissertations and recent
masters degree theses. The index is divided by subject, and the
entries for each author include a code that refers to a specific

IX. CURRENT AWARENESS SERVICES
The following services can help you keep up on developments
in your field or provide you with the latest information in your
research areas. The library would be glad to assist you in using
these services.
CURRENT CONTENTS
Current Contents is a current-awareness
index to the tables of contents of selected core journals in science
and technology. It includes a keyword index that allows subject
access to the most current material available in many fields. The
publisher of Current Contents, the Institute for Scientific
Information, also provides, for a fee, the full text of articles
referenced in Current Contents.
The CD-ROM version of Current Contents, with
abstracts, will soon be networked at NDSU, and accessible from computers
connected to the University ethernet. Contact your subject librarian
for information. You will also be able to access the electronic
version of Current Contents from the Library.
CARL UNCOVER
The Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries (CARL)
UNCOVER database is a table of contents bibliographic database similar
to Current Contents. Approximately 12,000 journals held by libraries
belonging to the Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries are included.
CARL also provides the full text of articles referenced in UNCOVER
for a fee. A gateway to CARL and the UNCOVER databases is available
through MSUS/PALS.
OTHER
A number of bibliographic computer databases
(e.g. the Chemical Abstracts file on STN) offer fee-based current-awareness
services. Computer searches are automatically and periodically updated,
and the result of each search is then mailed to you.
X. BOOK REVIEWS AND COMPREHENSIVE BIBLIOGRAPHIES
Return to Top
The sources listed below can provide the researcher
with an awareness of what books and journals have been and are being
published in a particular area of interest. NDSU Libraries also
have access to the RLIN database and the OCLC-EPIC database. RLIN
is the Research Libraries Group shared computerized card catalog.
RLIN provides access to the combined holdings of many of the nation's
largest research libraries (e.g. Library of Congress, Yale, Princeton,
Stanford, University of Michigan, University of Wisconsin, University
of Illinois, etc.). The OCLC-EPIC database represents the holdings
of about 40,000 libraries in 27 countries.

XII. GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS
The United States government is one of the largest
publishers in the world. It produces and distributes an enormous
amount of technical data in agency reports, contractor reports,
periodicals, books, and other documents. NDSU's Documents Library
shares status with UND as an official depository for United States
documents. The government gives many materials to depository libraries,
and only asks that they be available for public use. Check with
a librarian to see which subjects are housed at NDSU, and which
are at UND. Government Documents at UND can be obtained through
Interlibrary Loan.
Monthly Catalog of United States Government
Publications. U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington D.C.
1895- . This index serves as a guide to the publications of U.S.
government departments and agencies. Only part of the U.S Government
publications are indexed in the Monthly Catalog. Many technical
documents are indexed elsewhere (see the section on technical reports
below). (Ref. Microfiche Z1223 .A18). The Monthly Catalog is available
for computer searching from 1976 to the present through MSUS/PALS
("SET FILE GPO").
