Library materials may be located using the library's online computerized
catalog WebPALS. PALS is available
from public access workstations in the library, from personal computers
on campus, and from off-campus personal computers equipped with
a modem or Internet connection. Please consult the library's printed
guides or a librarian if you need information about using PALS.
Use the volumes entitled Library of Congress Subject Headings
or the LCA file on PALS to find the correct subjects used in the
catalog. Standard subdivisions may be used following most subject
headings, e.g. CIVIL ENGINEERING--DICTIONARIES or STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING--HANDBOOKS,
MANUALS, ETC.. To find periodical classification numbers, locations,
and holdings, search PALS using keywords from the periodical's title.
The NDSU Library uses several classification systems. Most of
the Libraries' periodicals are in theDewey
Decimal classification system. The Libraries' books and reference
materials are classified in the Library
of Congress system, and U.S. government documents are classed
in the Superintendent
of Documents classification system.
Professional librarians knowledgeable in the subject collections
housed on each level are available at the reference desk of the
Main Library to assist you. Library
subject specialists are also available by appointment to provide
in-depth assistance in locating and using library resources and
services in specific subject areas. Using their knowledge and experience
in searching bibliographic databases, they can also help you identify
and obtain material not owned by the University.
Guides to the literature help the researcher determine what bibliographies,
indexes, directories, statistical sources and other reference books
and information resources pertain to his subject. These guides can
often save hours of research time if they are consulted at the beginning
of a research project.

While we are fortunate to have several approaches to locating
standards and specifications today, identifying and obtaining a
needed standard or specification can often involve a fairly complex
literature search. Global Engineering, a subsidiary of Information
Handling Services, is one well-known example of a private, fee-based,
document delivery service specializing in providing copies of standards
and specifications to organizations and individuals. The National
Center for Standards and Certification Information acts as an

Many of the most frequently requested standards are available
from the following suppliers:
Because standards and specifications are so frequently updated
and so numerous, they are not all collected by the NDSU Libraries.
The Libraries do possess a collection of ANSI standards that are
now becoming dated. Other standards that are collected by the Libraries
can typically be located by checking in MNSCU PALS under the title
of the standard or under the subject heading appropriate for the
standard sought and the subheading "standards". The following
indexes and reference sources may be helpful in identifying standards
and specifications produced by other standards producing organizations.
The standard producing organization or the suppliers listed above
can then be contacted to provide the standard desired. The NSSN,
the Index and Directory of Industry Standards (Ref. T59.2.U6
I5) and the other reference works below provide access to the majority
of current standards and provide the addresses and phone numbers
of most standards preparing organizations. Other organizations addresses
and phone numbers can be obtained from the many directories held
by the Libraries.

Dissertations and theses have two features which are valuable
to those doing research: (1) since they are required to be unique
and contribute new information, they deal with topics which are
on the leading edge of progress; and (2) they generally have fairly
extensive bibliographies. The following list of directional sources
will help you find theses and dissertations on your topic. You will
find dissertations and theses completed at NDSU in MNSCU PALS under
the paper's author, subject, or title. Search "te 'department
name' thes#" in MNSCU PALS for theses and dissertations from
specific academic departments at NDSU. NDSU has few theses that
were completed at other institutions. Many theses and dissertations
are available through interlibrary loan or are available for purchase
through University
Microfilms International. The Center
for Research Libraries and the British
Library are two major sources of foreign dissertations. The
Reference Desk or the Interlibrary Loan Office in the Main Library
can help you locate and request items.
Comprehensive Dissertation Index. 1861+. Annual. The best
printed index to doctoral dissertations and recent masters degree
theses. The index is divided by subject, and the entries for each
author include a code that refers to a specific entry in Dissertation
Abstracts International. Dissertation
Abstracts International is available for computer searching
from 1861 to date online. Contact a librarian. (Ref. Microfilm Z5053

selected core journals in science and technology. It includes a
keyword index that allows subject access to the most current material
available in many fields. The publisher of Current Contents,
the Institute for Scientific Information, also provides, for a fee,
the full text of articles referenced in Current Contents.
CARL UNCOVER REVEAL.
The Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries UNCOVER database
is a table of contents bibliographic database similar to Current
Contents. Approximately 17,000 journals held by libraries belonging
to the Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries are included in the
database. A subscription current awareness service called REVEAL
(free to NDSU students, faculty, and staff) is available. The REVEAL
service will email to you the tables of contents of journals or
the citations of articles that match your saved interest profile.
CARL also provides the full text of articles referenced in UNCOVER
and UNCOVER REVEAL for a fee.
A number of bibliographic computer databases (e.g. the Chemical
Abstracts file on STN) offer fee-based current-awareness services.
Saved computer searches are automatically and periodically updated,
and the result of each search is then mailed or e-mailed to you.
The sources listed below can provide the researcher with an awareness
of what books and journals have been and are being published in
a particular area of interest. NDSU Libraries also have access to
the RLIN database and the OCLC WorldCat database.
Finally, you can search the catalogs of many libraries through links
provided by the Libraries
Directory .
RLIN is the Research Libraries Group shared computerized
card catalog. The RLIN catalog provides access to the combined
holdings of many of the largest research libraries (e.g. Library
of Congress, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, University of Michigan,
University of Wisconsin, University of Illinois, etc.). An NDSU
librarian can help you search the RLIN databases.
The OCLC
WorldCat database represents the holdings of about 40,000
libraries in many different countries.

The United States government is one of the largest publishers
in the world. It produces and distributes an enormous amount of
technical data in agency reports, contractor reports, periodicals,
books, and other documents. The government gives many materials
to depository libraries, and only asks that they be available for
public use. NDSU's Documents Library shares status with UND as an
official depository for United States documents. Lists of agencies
whose publications are available at UND
and NDSU are available. Each
library may also receive some publications from the other library's
categories. For example, NDSU receives some publications from agencies
such as the Census Bureau, NASA, Smithsonian Institution, and Internal
Revenue Service, which are in UND's categories. Government Documents
at UND can be obtained through Interlibrary Loan.

Engineers need statistics to plan, design, and justify their proposals.
Typical examples would be the engineer estimating costs of materials
for a proposed design; the engineer who must justify manpower budgets
and equipment purchases; the engineer selecting a plant site who
must know population figures and statistics. The following directional
sources will help you find the statistics you need when you need
them. See the Department of Commerce
