Location of Materials in the Main Library

BOOKS are on Second Floor and are organized by Library of Congress Number.

CURRENT PERIODICALS (Magzines and Journals) are on the Main Floor and are organized by Dewey Decimal Number.

PERIODICALS that are older are housed out of the Library and can be identified through the WebPALS online catalog and requested through the Pull Service.

REFERENCE materials are in the Reference Area on the First Floor.

GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS ("Documents") are on Second Floor, after the regular books, and they are organized by SuDocs (Superintendent of Documents) numbers.

FOLIOS are large books. They can be found on separate shelves at the end of the Z's, before the Government Documents begin.

MULTIMEDIA: Videos, tapes, records, etc. are cataloged in WebPALS and are located in a separate area on the First Floor. Ask at the Reference Desk.

    Main Library Departments

REFERENCE: On the First Floor near the Computer Clusters and Printers. Reference Librarians are there to help you. Please ask for assistance!

INTERLIBRARY LOAN: On the First Floor, in the hall on your way to the Reference area. This is where you would pick up any ILL requests you submitted.

CIRCULATION/CHECKOUT: On the First Floor near the exit. This is the place to check out material from the Library. You MUST have your ID card to check out material.

CURRENT PERIODICALS are near the front entrance to the Library. You may ask for help locating items at the Circulation Desk if you already have the call number from WebPALS. For other questions, please go to the Reference Desk, also on the First Floor.

    Branch Libraries

There are three Branch Libraries at NDSU:

      Chemistry (H.J. Klosterman Chemistry Library)
      Architecture/Landscape Architecture
      Health Sciences

Consult a campus map (available at the Reference Desk) for the locations of Branch Libraries.

    Summer Library Hours

Always check the library calendar for changes during holidays, breaks, and summer sessions.

    Rules and Procedures

    Circulation Privileges

Governor's School students may check out books for up to four weeks. Books must be returned by the end of Governor's School. Books may be recalled by another person (and vice versa) after two weeks. Periodicals can NOT be checked out. You MUST have your ID card with youto check out library material.

      InterLibrary Loan Privileges

Due to the short time period for Governor's School, InterLibrary Loan is only available in our region for Governor's School participants.

To get an InterLibrary Loan, you must have your Library Card with the barcode. Use the barcode and password (your last name up to eight letters) to complete the forms for articles or books, or place them right in the records when you are searching the WebPALS online catalog.

      Obtaining Articles

Due to the flood in the Library in June 2000, surviving paper and microform periodicals are located in a storage building. Branch Library materials were not affected. We also now have many electronic journal subscriptions. Follow these steps:

      1. Check if we have an electronic subscription
        1. Go to the Library's E-JOURNAL page at www.lib.ndsu.nodak.edu/ejourn.
        2. Enter the title of the periodical in the search box.
        3. Click on the journal name. We have E-journal subscriptions from a variety of sources. Some E-journals may be available from more than one supplier. Years included will vary with each subscription.

      2. Check if we have the periodical in paper or microform
        1. Click on WebPALS from the Library home page, www.lib.ndsu.nodak.edu or go directly to WebPALS at www.lib.ndsu.nodak.edu/databases/webpals.php.
        2. Search The Library Catalog.
        3. Select Title, exact.
        4. Enter the periodical title (for example, Newsweek or Crop Science) in the search box and click Go.
        5. If we have the periodical, display the record.
        6. Click on Location details to see if the issue you need is available in paper or microform.
          • If it's an issue since the June 2000 flood and is Available, write down the call number and go to the current periodicals shelves in the main floor lobby.
          • If it's an older issue and is Available, request delivery through the Pull Service. The Pull Service is available for journals that the Library owns but are stored off-campus. Enter the information on the Pull Service Request Form and send your request-the issue will be delivered to the Circulation Desk, usually within 24 hours, and will be held for you for 3 days. You can either read the article in the periodical or make a photocopy on one of the Library's photocopiers.
        7. Some online catalog records in WebPALS give an Electronic Link (URL) to the electronic version.

      3. Request the article from Interlibrary Loan
        1. Go to the Interlibrary Loan Periodical Request page at www.ndsu.edu/library/ill/ill-periodical.php. Complete and send the form. You will need the barcode number on your library card to do this.
        2. Requests for articles available through an electronic subscription (E-Journals) will be returned.

      Computers and Printing

Please know and follow the NDSU Computer Policy. Computers on First Floor are to be used only for Library Research. Please use the clusters on the Second Floor, or at other campus locations, for Word Processing and other related applications. Please be moderate when using the printers. Print and pick up only what you need.

      Other Considerations

Please do NOT reshelve library material. We keep statistics on the use of library material to help us know what to order in the future, and what to keep. Please place material that you have used on a nearby table, or if it is Reference material, please take it back to First Floor so that others can find it.

Please be considerate of others around you in the Libraries.

WebPALS, NDSU's Online Catalog

WebPALS is accessible by using computers in the Libraries, the computer clusters, or from any computer with a modem and Internet browser.

WebPALS will search for books, audiovisuals, documents, and folios (oversized books), etc. that are in the NDSU Libraries. You can also search the catalogs of the Tri-College Libraries in the drop down box that automatically opens to North Dakota State University.

For a review on using WebPALS, go to the online tutorial, Introduction to Searching WebPALS.

Databases for Identifying Articles

InfoTrac

InfoTrac has the Expanded Academic ASAP database, which includes academic or scholarly articles, and the General Reference Center Gold database, which indexes general interest articles and some reference books. Other databases feature health, computers, and business information.

1. Select InfoTrac from the Research Tools column on the left side of the NDSU Libraries' Home Page, http://www.lib.ndsu.nodak.edu/.

2. Select the database/collection you want to use by clicking on the Start searching link for the collection.

3. The Keyword search screen will automatically open. Type your search term or terms in the Search box.
For example:
teen* drinking If you type in the phrase teen* drinking, you will get articles that include the phrases teen drinking, teenage drinking, teenagers drinking, etc. The asterisk ( * ) is the truncation symbol in InfoTrac.
teen* and drinking If you type in teen* and drinking, your search will include any articles that have both words anywhere within the articles, with various endings on the word teen. The "and" is a Boolean operator. "Or" and "not" can also be used in these databases.

4. Once you have entered your search terms, you may also click in the box under Limit the current search (optional) to limit your search to articles that have full text. The search results will then be limited to only those articles that you can see on the computer screen.

5. When you click on the Search button, your results list will appear listing the articles that matched your search terms with the most current articles first.

6. View the individual articles by clicking on the View text and retrieval choices link underneath each citation.

7. Articles may be printed. Use the Print link in the blue left-hand column of the InfoTrac screen.
