Acquiring Needed Articles
The NDSU Libraries subscribes to many journals. Some subscriptions
are electronic, and others are traditional paper subscriptions.
Journal articles not available at NDSU can be requested through
the Interlibrary Loan service. ILL is available at no charge to
all NDSU faculty, staff, and students. Although the ILL Department
cannot guarantee delivery time, every request is given prompt
attention.
Once you have an article citation, these are the steps to find
the article:
To check if NDSU has an electronic subscription:
1) Go to the E-Journals page https://www.lib.ndsu.nodak.edu/ejourn/
2) Enter the title of the periodical in the search box and click
on Submit Search.
3) If NDSU does not have an electronic subscription, the screen
will display 0 hits. No matches found for (your periodical title).
This means it is not available electronically.
4) If NDSU has an electronic subscription, a link will appear at
the bottom of the search screen. Click on the journal name to go
directly to the database. Some E-Journals may be available from
more than one supplier. The years included in the electronic subscription
will be displayed, and the years may vary among databases.
5) Search the e-resource for your specific article.
To check if NDSU has the periodical in paper, microfiche,
or microfilm:
1) Open ODIN http://odinlibrary.org/nwq.html
2) Type the name of the periodical in the Search For field.
3) Select Title from the Search Type drop down menu.
4) Click the Search button.
5) Display the record if NDSU has it by clicking on the #-view link.
If the periodical is not at NDSU, request it from Interlibrary Loan.
6) Click on the link next to the word Availability to see if the
specific issue you need is available in either paper or microform.
The Collection column indicates the item's location. The call number
will be displayed in the Call Number column.
If the issue says Periodicals, it will be shelved
in the Current Periodicals section of the library, just south of
the reference desk on the main floor.
If the issue is marked Annex, it is in storage. Request
it by using the Pull Service Request Form (www.ndsu.edu/library/peri).
Enter the citation information on the form and send the request.
The periodical will be delivered to the Circulation Desk within
24 hours, and will be held there for three days.
If the periodical is Microfiche or Microfilm, it will
be in the Library basement.
If the issue is not owned by NDSU or is listed as
Flood Loss, request it through Interlibrary Loan.
To request the article from Interlibrary Loan:
1) Go to the Interlibrary Loan Periodical Request page http://www.lib.ndsu.nodak.edu/ill/ill-periodical
2) Fill the electronic form with your article citation information
and send the request. Interlibrary Loan requests typically take
up to seven days to arrive.
3) Requests for articles available from an E-Journal will be returned.
