Borrowing Privileges and Responsibilities

Library Cards
  • All borrowers must have a valid NDSU ID/Library Card.
  • Faculty, staff and student cards are valid as long as the user is associated with NDSU.
  • Community users may purchase a Special Permit for $10 per year. (Does not allow ILL Services).
  • NDSU and all MSUS/PALS libraries honor each other's library cards. The NDSU Libraries also honor all valid North Dakota University or College ID's. Loan policies of the lending library must be followed.
  • Area high school student cards are issued at the Main Library Circulation Desk with authorization from the high school librarian. Cards are valid for the current school year. Privileges include a four-week checkout, one renewal, and a 5-item limit.
  • Users are responsible for all materials charged on their card.
  • Lost cards should be reported to Circulation immediately. A block will be placed on the lost card to prevent use by others. Replacement cards can be purchased at the Korner Mart in the Memorial Union.

Patrons must have a valid library card to "charge" the room.

Renewals
  • Books and media materials may be renewed once. Periodicals may not be renewed.
  • Library materials may be renewed on any PALS terminal or at any of the Libraries' Circulation desks. Phone renewals will not be accepted.
  • To renew online type: DPD (Your Barcode) (Your Last Name) for a list of materials & due dates. OR DPT (Your Barcode) (Your Last Name) for a list of titles of your materials. Next type: REN (Your Barcode) (Your Last Name) and choose the numbers of the items you wish to renew. (e.g. 1, 5, 7, 9). Press enter and watch for your new due date.
  • In WebPALS, click on "Patron Info Page", on the bottom of the page, and select the "Renew titles linked to your patron record" button.
Reserves
  • Reserves are materials selected by faculty for limited circulation.
    They are held at the circulation desks of the main or departmental libraries.
  • Reserves are requested by faculty name and reserve number of item. This information may be accessed online by typing: RES (Faculty Last Name) or RES (Course name and number).
  • Reserves must be returned on time. Fines are charged hourly for overdues. The loan period for reserves may vary with each item (e.g. two hours, overnight, three days, etc.).
Overdues
  • Only one courtesy notice is sent for overdue materials.
    The notice states the due date, grace period and explanation of fines.
  • For materials not returned within the grace period, users are billed the replacement cost of the material. When the overdue material is returned, the user is credited only the replacement cost.
  • Fees may be paid at any Tri-College circulation desk (or branch libraries).
  • Overdue fees must be paid promptly to avoid suspension of library privileges (including Tri-College). In addition, unpaid fines will result in an inability to register for classes or to receive transcripts or diplomas.
PALS
  • WebPALS a patron may review their library activity by doing the following

    In WebPALS click on "Patron Info Page" button at the bottom of the page and select either the title or barcode option.

Returning materials
  • The patron is responsible for material until it reaches the appropriate library. This should be considered when returning material.
  • Library materials may be returned at the Main Library or any of the Branch Libraries. Periodicals, reserves, reference, ILL, and audio-visual materials must be returned inside one of the libraries. Books may be returned in any of the book drop locations.
Holds/Recalls
  • All books are subject to recall after two weeks. The borrower has exclusive use of an item for this period. After two weeks, a recalled item must be returned promptly or a fine will be assessed.
  • To recall an item, type:
    HLD (Your Barcode) (Your Last Name) (Item Barcode)
    Watch screen to see that the hold is accepted. Patron will be notified when the item is available.
  • In WebPALS click on the "Place Hold" button and fill in the "Submit Hold Request" form.
Suspension of Privileges
  • Disregard for library policies will result in suspension of borrowing privileges.
  • Borrowing privileges are reinstated when fines are paid, materials are returned, problem situations are resolved or lost library cards are reactivated.
  • Problems regarding suspension may be discussed with a Circulation Supervisor (during normal business hours, Monday through Friday).
