LUMINA is the online catalog of the libraries at the University of Minnesota/Twin Cities. Because this is the largest library in our area, it's an important source of information for researchers on the NDSU campus.

Logging onto LUMINA

LUMINA (the University of Minnesota's online catalog) may be searched by utilizing the host gateway. Author, title, subject, medical subject or keyword searching can be used to access materials. To connect to LUMINA from NDSU Libraries catalog:

Computer Dispays	You Respond
TRN=>	set host lum and hit the Return Key
Please enter your terminal ID; '?' for menu;	Enter the number of your terminal type* and hit the Return key
You will then get a menu which lists the University Libraries as choice 1 and prompts you with the line: Please Indicate Your Menu Selection Here ==>	1 and hit the Return key
A new menu will appear indicating LUMINA as choice 1 and prompts you with the line: Please Indicate Your Menu Selection Here ===>	1and hit the Return key

LUMINA is also available via the Internet (address lumina.lib.umn.edu).

*Your terminal type depends on how you are accessing. If searching from the catalogs at NDSU your terminal type is either "23" (Formatted TeleVideo 925/950) or 71 (TeleVideo 905 Remote echo mode). If you are using a modem and dialing into the NDSU catalog, your terminal type is dependent upon your communication software. For example, if you are using KERMIT, your terminal type is vt100.
Logging off of LUMINA

Entering XQ from any screen will return you to the main menu; when "XQ" is entered from the main menu it will log you off the system. Typing set host local from any screen will return you to the NDSU catalog.

Searching LUMINA

Searching LUMINA is very different from searching the NDSU Libraries Online Catalog. LUMINA uses a series of menu screens to help you search. You can begin a search from any screen. If you make a mistake typing, just backspace to the error and retype. The following information is offered as a quick guide. More extensive help is available online with LUMINA, just type the letter h and then the or key.

To search by author type: a=[last name][first name]

• Example: a=einstein a
• Example: a=university of minnesota

To search by title type: t=[title]

• Example: t=journal of metals
• Example: t=hamlet

To search by subject type: s=[subject heading]

• Example: s=minnesota
• Example: s=minnesota-history

To search by a medical subject type: sm=[subject heading]

• Example: sm=microbiology

To search by keyword ("term") type: k=[term(s)]

• Example: k=third world

To reach Intro Screen type: e
To reach Item Number (i.e. 23) type: 23
To reach Next Record type: m
To reach Continuation of a Record type: hit Return key
To reach Index Screen type: i
To reach Guide Screen type: g

Materials found in the LUMINA catalog may be requested from the NDSU Libraries Interlibrary Loan Office.
