Accessing Electronic Journals

Over 10,000 journal titles are now available full text electronically, from campus, through the NDSU Libraries. Many are also available off campus but require authentication. For more on authentication please see the About Remote Access section at the end of this web page.

The easiest way to see if the journal title you need is available full text is to start with our E-Journal database. You can access it at https://www.lib.ndsu.nodak.edu/ejourn/, or through the Libraries’ Home Page as a category link at the bottom of the page.

In the above example:

The sample screen shows a search for the term “communication” as part of the journal title. The database automatically truncates, both forward and backward. Any journal title in our database that contains the term “communication” will appear in the results list. There are 177 hits for “communication,” including AI Communications; Applicable Algebra in Engineering, Communication and Computing; Asian Journal of Communication; and Association for Computing Machinery, Communications of the ACM.

  1. AI Communications is available through EBSCO. Clicking on the linked title takes you to a page in EBSCO where you can select an issue to see the contents and links to full text articles. The notes explain that full text begins with 1997 and is delayed for 12 months. That means that the full text is not available for the most current 12 months.

  2. Applicable Algebra in Engineering, Communication and Computing is available through Springer, the publisher. Clicking on the linked journal title gives a list of issues back to volume 10, no. 1 (1999), that can be viewed full text.

  3. Asian Journal of Communication is another title available through EBSCO.

  4. Association for Computing Machinery. Communications of the ACM is available full text through ProQuest. Clicking on this title will take you into the ABI Inform Global collection where you will see all the available issues of the journal. Full text begins in 1992. Abstracts are available back to March, 1972. Clicking on the info button button will take you to our subscription information.

Links on the E-Journal search page also let you see lists of available E-Journals by letters of the alphabet, by department, or by broad subject categories.

Other Methods of Electronic Journal Access

Full Text Databases

EBSCO and ProQuest are two access points for a variety of full text databases. Both services are linked to the NDSU Libraries’ Home Page, under Research Tools or as quick links at the bottom of the page. Other full text databases are also available.

Not all of the articles indexed in these databases are full text. Many are only citations or citations with abstracts. Full text in these databases may have limited graphics, not full content. Some articles may have only text, others may contain tables but not other graphics, etc. If you need missing graphics, you will need to use alternate forms of the periodical that we have available (other E-journal sources, current periodicals, microforms, Pull Service for older or stored items), or Interlibrary Loan for those that we do not own in any other format.

Publisher Pages

A number of major publishers offer online access to NDSU journals and the journals can be accessed and searched directly from their pages. The Libraries’ Publishers and Aggregators page provides a list of links to access these publishers.

Aggregator (Commercial Firm) Pages

Many of our electronic publications are available from commercial firms that provide access to numerous journals. Besides providing a unified access point, these services allow you to search multiple journals using a single search system. The Libraries’ Publishers and Aggregators page provides a list of links to access our aggregators.

About Remote Access

Many of our electronic journals are available from off-campus if you are affiliated with NDSU. Those journals that are not available are restricted by licensing agreements. In general, access to available journals requires authentication by u sing the Library's "My Login" authentication procedure.

Note: Your Campus Connection ID/password and ODIN ID/password are not the same as those used by other campus systems, including the Libraries, for authentication. This authentication requires that you first set up a login and password through the Information Technology Services Enroll page at: https://secure.ndus.nodak.edu/services/. Be sure to select Library and any other services you might need, such as Blackboard, in the Services section. This setup may not take effect immediately, so please allow up to 2 days for it to be established.
