Soil Science Sites

  • Soil Science Society of America- Society information and services, and links to other soil science sites
  • Tri-Society Links; links to soils, agronomy, and crop sites on the web. Maintained by Tri-Societies (Agronomy Society of America, Soil Science Society of America, and Crop Science Society of America).
  • NDSU Dept of Soil Science: Information about NDSU department and its research, courses and programs offered, and faculty, and some faculty publicatons; also provides links to major soil science sites on the web.
Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) A USDA agency involved with the conservaton, improvement, and sustainability of U.S. natural resources and environment. Programs include the national soil survey, and various wetlands, water quality, forest , resource and grazing land conservation endeavors.
  • AgNIC Soil Health Information Portal: Agriculture Network Information Center (AgNIC) is a distributed network that provides access to selected agriculture information in electronic form, subject area experts, and other resources. The soil science page is hosted by Cornell University. AgNIC is sponsored by the National Agricultural Library and the Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service of USDA and various land grant universities.
  • Sustainable Agriculture
    • Sustainable Agriculture Network(SAN) SAN is the communications and outreach arm of the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program funded by USDA. Their site includes tip sheets, information of programs and publicatons, funding opertunities, and educational materials.
    • National Sustainable Agriculture Information Service:Soils and Compost information USDA information service arm of ATTRA (Appropriate Technology Transfer for Rural Areas). The site includes information and other technical assistance to farmers, ranchers, Extension agents, educators, and others involved in sustainable agriculture in the United States.
  • EROS Data Center: Earth resources observation systems The USGS's EROS Data Center (also known as EDC) distributes satelite images, aerial photographs, and digital maps recording land-surfact phenomena.
  • Soil Taxonomy - The Eleven Soil Orders by Prof. Paul McDaniel of the Soils Science Division of the University of Idaho. Provides brief descriptions and images of soil profiles and landscapes.
  • Soil Moisture. NOAA's Climate Prediction Center's data site on soil moisture across the US. Soil moisture data are provided as color contour maps that represent calculated soil moisture, anomalies, and percentiles for the most recent day, monthly, and twelve-month time periods. Forecasts, 25 year summaries, and other information is also presented.
  • Arid Lands Information Center specialized information concerning all aspects of arid lands research and information.
  • Fundamentals of remote sensing Provided by the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing, this site is a tutorial on the basics of remote sensing.

Climate

  • North Dakota NDAWN system. Weather conditions collected from 66 stations distributed across North Dakota, the Red River Valley, and border regions of surrounding states. Hourly, daily, weekly, monthy, yearly data for maximum and minimum air temperature, wind speed, soil temperature, rain, dew point, wind chill, and more.
  • U.S. Crop Weather reports. Produced by the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service. Weekly reports for each state; also links to historical data, and crop progress reports.
  • Weekly Weather and Crop Bulletin, and the Major World Crop Areas and Climatic Profiles Handbook. Produced by the USDA Office of the Chief Meteorologist.
  • National Climatic Data Center This site includes current and archived U.S. and global climate monitoring data and reports. Some data is most appropriate to professionals and researchers; however, some data is popular with the general public. The site includes global information on extreme climate events, such as hurricanes, global climate change, el Nino, drought, climate monitoring, tornadoes, heavy precipitation, and temperature extremes. Also included are weather satellite images since 1992, Storm Events Databse with reports back to 1950.
  • Climate Prediction Center U.S. Drought Monitor
  • Climatological data NOAA's climatological data information. Climatological Data is a monthly publication of daily temperature, precipitation, snow, evaporation, soil temp, for 8000 US sites. Other climatological informatin also available on the site. Some reports also available in the NDSU collection in print format: North Dakota, Minnesota, and South Dakota, and local areas of North Dakota.
  • Globalchange.gov is the "gateway to global change data and information." The site is the product of the Data and Information Working Group, a collaboration of eight US agencies (DOD, DOC, DOE, DOI, EPA, NSF, NASA, and USDA) that address global change issues. The main goal of the site is to enable interagency data management and sharing.
  • Observed Impacts of Global Climate Change in the U.S.Prepared by the Pew Center on Global Climate Change, November 2004. Full text of the report is freely available.
  • For current weather information, go to our North Dakota Resources on the Net: Weather page.
