  • Encyclopedia of Pest Management (available from NDSU capus computers only) A searchable online reference work for professionals as well as students at all levels on all types of insect, weed, plant pathogens and vertebrate pests of crops and livestock. Coverage includes: principles of integrated pest management (IPM), pests and their management, biological control, control through gene technology and breeding, pesticides, human health impacts and costs of pesticides, infestation monitoring and modeling, ecological interactions and more.
  • Plant Management Network -Searchable database including online peer-reviewed journals; also includes the Plant Science Database, Plant and Plant Disease Image database, Variety Trials from member institutions.

  • AgNIC Plant Science resources and hotlinks : Agriculture Network Information Center (AgNIC) is a distributed network that provides access to selected agriculture information in electronic form, subject area experts, and other resources. AgNIC is sponsored by the National Agricultural Library and the Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service of USDA, and various landgrant univeristies. The Plant Science, hosted by University of Nebraska-Lincoln, site is searchable and includes a broad array of information on many crops.
  • Sustainable Agriculture
    • Sustainable Agriculture Network(SAN) SAN is the communications and outreach arm of the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program funded by USDA. Their site includes tip sheets, information of programs and publicatons, funding opertunities, and educational materials.
    • National Sustainable Agriculture Information Service: field crop information USDA information service arm of ATTRA (Appropriate Technology Transfer for Rural Areas). The site includes information and other technical assistance to farmers, ranchers, Extension agents, educators, and others involved in sustainable agriculture in the United States.

    • Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Online "Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada provides information, research and technology, and policies and programs to achieve security of the food system, health of the environment and innovation for growth." Includes trade, situation and outlook, and other information for crops grown in Canada.

    • USDA Economics, Statistics, and Market Information System. Links to ERS and NASS outlook and production reports and datasets. Check Field Crop, Crop Production, and Feed Grain links for information concerning barley.
    • North Dakota Barley Council The Council supports research and education, and develops markets for barley. Their site includes information about N.D. approved varieties, barley import data, barley research links, a variety dictionary, crop quality reports, barley facts, feed information, and links to other barley related sites (other barley councils, and major companies purchasing barley).     • Flax Council of Canada: .   • Industrial Hemp
    • Industrial Hemp.net Privides links to trade orginizations, pictures, government agencies, and research publications.
    • Vote Hemp "a non-profit organization dedicated to the acceptance of and free market for Industrial Hemp." The site is mainly for voter information and action.

    • NORML. lobbying organization for reform of laws. Contains news, legislation, and publishes a newsletter. Includes information on both industrial hemp and medical uses.

    • CoHIP Lobbing organization from Colorado. Includes an industrial hemp page with legislative progress in numerous states, federal legislation, as well as Canadian information, although this information is not currently updated.

  • Wheat and Small Grains
    • North Dakota Small Grains Page Developed by faculty and staff from NDSU Extension, Experiment Station, and College of Agriculture to share information about all aspects of small grains production and marketing. Included are WeedPro (a weed control database) weed images, publications and links to disease and insect problems and control, crop rotation, yield data from North Dakota Research Centers, national grain standards, North Dakota growing degree days, links to grain exchanges, and links to extension and experiment station publications. The site is nicely arranged, is searchable, and has direct e-mail access to extension agents.
    • ERS Wheat Briefing Room The wheat briefing room offers a synthesis of the Economic Research Service of USDA (ERS) research, analysis, and outlook on U.S. and global wheat markets, including current and historical data on supply, demand, and trade; research articles; and information on current ERS projects.
    • ERS Wheat Data "contains statistics on the five classes of wheat—hard red winter, hard red spring, soft red winter, white, and durum—and rye. Includes data published in the monthly Wheat Outlook and historical data previously published in the annual Wheat Yearbook . Examines world and U.S. production, consumption, trade, stocks, and prices for wheat.
    • North Dakota Wheat Commission Provides information about the Wheat Commission, hard red spring wheat and durum wheat, market information and industry news. Also includes extensive listing of grain resources links to grain and trade associations, organizations, and government agencies, and their publication Grains of Truth, about the U.S.-Canada wheat trade.
    • AgNIC Plant Science resources and hotlinks : Agriculture Network Information Center (AgNIC) is a distributed network that provides access to selected agriculture information in electronic form, subject area experts, and other resources.     • Northern Crops Institute: NCI is a learning center for northern grown crops. The NCI site provides schedule of courses, overview of facilities, and links to other wheat and milling sites. It has a nice collection of links to milling and baking association and food technology sites.
    • Minnesota Association of Wheat Growers site for small grains producers. Includes news, market information, research reports, crop fact sheets and full text issues of Prairie Grains Magazine, and links to small grains (mostly wheat) associations, corporations, and online magazines
    • National Association of Wheat Growers: Provides legislative updates, links to state wheat associations, and marketing and research information.
    • U.S. Wheat Associates: USW develops international markets for U.S. wheat on behalf of American wheat farmers. Their site has current market information, and weekly harvest reports with detailed quality information all classes of U.S. wheat (moisture, protein content, etc).
    • Kansas State University wheat page: Electronic information about wheat provided by Kansas State University. Provides comprehensive information about wheat, and links to useful wheat sites.

  • Potatoes:
    • ERS Potato Briefing Room The potato briefing room offers a synthesis of the Economic Research Service of USDA (ERS) research, analysis, and outlook on U.S. and global potato markets, including current and historical data on supply, demand, and trade; research articles; and information on current ERS projects.
    • Global Potato News Both a digest of information, and a gateway to links concerning all aspects of potatoes: production, biotechnology, breeding, irrigation marketing, company information, world wide trends, and more. Links mostly to government and research sites of scientific/agriculture nature. Includes a subject directory, potato news from around the world, potato PR, market information, and conference and company information.
    • Potato Information Exchange: Maintained by the Oregon State University Department of Crop and Soil Science who describe their site as a "clearing house for growers and other production-oriented professionals. It provides text on most aspects of production, storage, and marketing and links to many additional topics of interest such as weather, food and water quality, pesticides and endangered specie".
    • Red River Valley Potato Growers Association. Provides news, events, potato related information/ resources, etc.
    • National Potato Council. Natonal trade association for potato growers. Includes links to legislative and trade news; also provides extensive list of links to potato growers associations, government agencies, industry and media contacts, etc.
  • Soybeans

    • National Sunflower Association provides a sunflower site including general information, crop and oil production statistics, world wide trade information, and daily market news; the site offers downloadable papers presented at the annual NSA Research Forum from 2002-present. Also includes a discussion list.

Organic Agriculture Information Access database "This is an electronic collection of historic United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) publications related to organic agriculture. There are now 186 full text and searchable
documents in the database which were published before 1942 (before synthetic
chemicals became widely used). Each publication contains state-of-the-art
information and data on organic farming that is as relevant for today's
agriculture as it was when first published."

NewCrop is the Web site of the Center for New Crops & Plant Products, at Purdue University. Includes a searchable database of reports, excerpts from books, resources and links to new and specialty crop information. It offers two major ways to access the information--an alphabetical index and a search engine. Plant Genome Databases

Search Google or other web search engines for appropriate genomic databases not listed below. Genomic information of agriculturally important plants includes databases for grains, soybeans, corn, alfalfa, sunflowers, trees, beans, aribidopsis and others. Some databases include information other than genomic including diseases, plant hybrid certifications, etc

Specific Genome sites

  • Gramene Gramene was funded by the USDA IFAFS program to create a curated, open-source, Web-accessible data resource for comparative genome analysis in the grasses. Its predessor was RiceGenes.
  • GrainGenes GrainGenes is a compilation of molecular and phenotypic information on wheat, barley, rye, oats and sugarcane. The site is supported by the USDA-ARS Plant Genome Research Program.
  • Soybase Soybean genomic database coordinated at Iowa State University, and funded by the USDA-ARS Plant Genome Program. Another soy genomic database called Soybean GBrowse is available from SIU Bioinformatics.
  • MaizeGDB Corn genomic database sponsored by the Maize Genetics/Genomics Database project, and USDA-ARS.
  • TreeGenes Forest tree genomic data.

General and Comprehensive Genome sites

  • AgNic Plant Genome Information Resource from the National Agricultural Library of the US Department of Agriculture - ARS. Access is provided to a variety of information services and publications covering many aspects of plant genome mapping.
  • NCBI Reference Sequences The National Center for Biotechnology Information presents the first full release of all NCBI Reference Sequence (RefSeq) records. RefSeq "aims to provide a comprehensive, integrated, non-redundant set of sequences, including genomic DNA, transcript (RNA), and protein products for major research organisms." The database currently includes over 785,000 proteins from numerous organisms, and additional records will be added as they become publicly available.   • GOLD™ Genomes OnLine DatabaseFree for academic and non-commercial use, the Genomes OnLine Database (GOLD) is an internet "resource for comprehensive access to information regarding complete and ongoing genome projects around the world. GOLD provides the largest available and most detailed monitoring of genome sequencing projects." This recently updated database presently contains 173 Published Complete Genomes (including 4 chromosomes, 445 Prokaryotic Ongoing Genomes, and 384 Eukaryotic Ongoing Genomes (including 8 chromosomes).   • Genetic Engineering Home Page Provided by the Church of Scotland's Society, Religion and Technology Project, this site focuses on bioethics concerned with contemporary issues dealing with the manipulation of genetic materials.

  • Control of Invasive Exotic Plants in the Great Plains: Annotated Bibliography (1996) Online annotated bibliography containing references on control of exotic plant species that occur in the Great Plains. Searchable on either the species of interest or on the type of control measure. Complete citations are provided, as well as summaries describing the control technique and whether it was successful.   • Invaders Database System. Comprehensive database of exotic plant names and weed distribution records for five northwestern states (MT, WY, ID, WA, OR) Noxious weed listings are also included for all states, and six Canadian provinces.
  • Wildland Invasive Species Program. Searchable file of weed images, data on dozens of weeds that are threatening native biodiversity, evaluations of hand tools, samples of Integrated Weed Management Plans for land owner/managers, and a very thorough Weed Control Methods Handbook. Plant Systematic and Plant Data Databases

  • PLANTS National Database Provided by the Natural Resources Conservation Service of the USDA, this important searchable database provides standardized information about the vascular plants, mosses, liverworts, hornworts, and lichens of the U.S. and its territories. It includes names, plant symbols, checklists, distributional data, species abstracts, characteristics, images, plant links, references, crop information, and automated tools. Searches my be sorted by threatened, endangered or wetland species. Includes distribution maps. Created to replace the National List of Scientific Plant Names.
  • PM Publications: searchable full-text database of publications produced by Plant Materials Centers of the U.S. Plants Materials Program and the National Plant Data Center. These publications deal with the selection, establishment, growth, management, and uses of the hundreds of plants—especially NRCS Improved Conservation Releases—that NRCS uses for land conservation activities. About 400 publications are now searchable.
  • University of Wisconsin-Madison plant systematics collection. Provides structured access to a teaching collection of plant images representing over 250 families and 1000 genera of vascular plants.
  • Flora of North America "Information on the names, taxonomic relationships, continent-wide distributions, and morphological characteristics of all plants native and naturalized found in North America north of Mexico. The Flora will appear in 30 volumes and will be available in print and on the Web."
  • Grass Manual on the Web Affiliated with the the Flora of North America project (as volumes 24-25), the Manual is similar in concept and format to the classic Hitchcock's Manual of Grasses of the United States giving taxonomic and systematic information. Only one volume has been prepared, and is available in print and on the Web.
