- National
Animal Identification System (NAIS) "a national program
intended to identify specific animals in the United States and
record their movement over their lifespans. It is being developed
by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and State agencies—in
cooperation with industry—to enable 48-hour traceback of the
movements of any diseased or exposed animal. This will help
to ensure rapid disease containment and maximum protection of
America's animals. This web site is a one-stop resource to the
facts about NAIS. It will be updated as new information becomes
available."
- The
National Farm Animal Identification and Records Act (FAIR).
Senate bill S2008
introduced Jan 2004 which requires the USDA to track the movement
of any animal within 48 hours. It also requires that a national-tracking
system for all U.S. livestock be up and running within 90 days
of the bill becoming law. For current news, also search the
Drovers web page (a free
service, but registration is required).
Meat Irradiation
- Report
attacks food irradiation "A new report
from two public-interest groups, titled "Food Irradiation:
A Gross Failure," calls for an end to government support
for irradiation as a method for enhancing food safety. The report,
issued by the Center for Food Safety and Food and Water Watch,
cites a number of scientific studies showing that irradiated foods,
particularly meat, have undesirable smell, taste, color and texture.
Irradiation also adds to the price of food, according to the report.
The authors conclude that food irradiation on a commercial scale
is a failure, and yet the government continues to invest taxpayer
money into its development." From Drovers Alert.
