Production

  • North Dakota Production
    • North Dakota Agricultural Statistics (Ref S99.Z3, and on the World Wide Web). Annual statistics on major plant and animal crops gathered and compiled by the state office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS)
    • NASS reports Weekly and monthly county estimates of major crops and animal production.
    • Reported Acreage. (S99 R46) Acreage statistics on all North Dakota crops. Compiled annually by farm subsidy reports submitted to the North Dakota Office of the Farm Service Agency. NDSU has 1981-present. Many minor crop production statistics are available here that are not reported in the NASS reports.
    • Mann Library at Cornell University; Gateway to tables, reports and datasets and databases relating to all aspects of agriculture and trade. The main site has searchable links to various types of data and sources. Gateway to USDA Economic Research Service statistics.
    • Census of Agriculture State, county and national agricultural statistics and charts including farm size, production, economic, and other data. Tables by geographic area, and by topic. Compiled every 5 years. Available online 1992-present. Print edition available in the library (Documents C3.31 for 1927-1992; Documents A92.53 for 1997-present); NOTE: print volumes are currently being re-shelved. Ask at the reference desk for assistance.
    • US State Fact Sheets: summary agricultural information from each state. Provided by the US Economic Research Service.
  • Other States and National Production
    • Situation & Outlook Report series These reports produced by the U.S.D.A.'s Economic Research Service provide current and prospective information on commodity supply, demand, and price conditions. Reports are issued for major crops and livestock. Earlier editions in the stacks: DOCUMENT A 93.... (check online catalog for specific reports). Datasets are also available.
    • Minnesota Agricultural Statistics and other NASS reports.

Trade

  • USDA Agricultural Marketing Service Provides state and national Market News for commodities including: cotton, dairy, fruits and vegetables, livestock, grain, seed, poultry, and tobacco. The system contains roughly 1,500 reports which may be searched by keyword or browsed by commodity, then subscribed to (for no cost) and received via Email whenever an update of the report is published.
  • USDA Economic Research Service Provides a multitude of research reports on all aspects of trade, including the U.S. Agricultural Trade Update.
  • National Trade DabaBase (available to NDSU campus only) Part of the StatUSA database. U.S. export and import trade information; also includes a myriad of reports relating to trade issues, and market predictions. Also available from the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service site. The Foreign Agricultural Trade of the United States (FATUS) sections are also available free of charge to the general public from the U.S. Economic Research Service FATUS web page.
  • USDA Agricultural Baseline Projections. 10 year forecast and analysis of commodity trade, farm income, and prices.
  • International macroeconomic data set from the Economic Research Service of USDA provides data from 1971 through 2013 for real (adjusted for inflation) gross domestic product (GDP), population, real exchange rates, and other variables for the 35 countries and 22 regions that are most important for U.S. agricultural trade.
  • Agricultural exchange rate data set. This data set from the Economic Research Service of the USDA contains annual and monthly data for exchange rates important to U.S. agriculture. It includes both nominal and real exchange rates for 80 countries (plus the European Union) as well as real trade-weighted exchange rate indexes for many commodities and aggregations.
  • USDA Foreign Agricultural Service Focuses on improving foreign market access for U.S. products. Attache Reports present information, trends and potentials for trade, as analyzed by FAS staff from around the world. Publishes AgExporter, a periodical which provides information on selling farm products overseas.FAS also collects data on foreign agriculture production & trade, and produces trade databases including:
    • Production, Supply and Distribution database, a database containing current and historical official USDA data on production, supply and distribution of agricultural commodities for the United States and key producing and consuming countries.
    • U.S. Trade Internet System A searchable database reporting United States international import and export trade statistics on agricultural, fish, forest and textile products from the inception of the Harmonized coding system in 1989 to the present.
  • FAO Trade Yearbook (Ref HD9000.4 F58) World export and import collected and compiled by the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization. The Annual print publication is updated by the FAO Quarterly Bulletin of Statistics (PERIODICAL 338.1 F76). The web site is searchable by crop, country, year, and other parameters.   • Canadian Market and Industry Services Branch Canadian trade and marketing statistics and reports. Also, try the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's Electronic Information Service (ACEIS) searchable site; included links to many national and provincial sources for agriculture, production, outlook and trade statistics and publications.
  • Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute (FAPRI): "Provides economic analysis for policy makers, opinion leaders, and stakeholders in U.S. agriculture" Also includes world wide export, import, acerage, yield information for major crops as well as long range projections. Research reports, and annual Briefing Book and FAPRI Outlook available full text online.
  • World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) "Issued monthly, WASDE provides the most current USDA forecasts of U.S. and world supply-use balances for major grains, soybeans and products, and cotton, and U.S. supply and use data for sugar and livestock products." WASDE is produced by the USDA World Agricultural Outlook Board, which coordinates the Department's commodity forecasting program; monitors global weather and analyzes its impact on agriculture; and coordinates USDA's weather, climate and remote sensing work.

  • Export@ll.net A commercially produced site with links to export and international business and marketing information on the web. Much of the information is available for free; some is restricted to subscribers for a fee.

Commodity Markets

  • Regular trade market sources such as Wall Street Journal, Fargo Forum, AgWeek (PER 630.T78405 Ag98), Farm&Ranch Guide (Per 630.5 F11), Doanes and other farm, crop and livestock trade publications. AgWeekonline and other electronic trade farm publications provide futures and cash market prices as a free service on their online site; other sources provide market information for subscribers to their online services.

  • Agricultural Market Information Virtual Library Market information sources available through the internet: daily to yearly market and outlook reports, prices, commodities and quotes. Written and managed by the Dept of Agricultural Economics at Michigan State University. U.S. and international markets. Sites included are evaluated with informative introductions to each.
  • Commodity Price Bulletin Provides monthly indices and averages of commodity prices since 1960.
    Daily and weekly prices, as well as full time series are included.

  • CRB Commodity Yearbook (REFERENCE HF1041 C56) Includes world wide trends, supply, prices, consumption, and production statistics for 314 commodities.

  • Market News from USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service. Free e-mail updating service available.
  • Sta Trading Services: Commercial futures and options service. Includes free Ag marketing web site with data and charts of pertinent to agricultural trading data including export sales, consumption, crop production, crop stocks, etc.

  • Selected Farm Machinery Statistics: U.S. production, shipments, industry and farm inventories, farm expenditures for capital purchases, repairs, and depreciation, and other financial information.
  • Fedstats: One stop shopping for a miriad of Federal Statistics: agriculture, population, energy, health, etc. Statistics include those collected and published by over 70 Federal agencies.
  • Stat-USA (available at the NDSU Main Library). Database of trade statistics, government documents and reports from the Foreign Agriculture Service, Economic Research Service, and others.
  • Farm Sector Income Reading Room: from the Economic Research Service, privides specialized agricultural statistics such as national and state farm income, farm cash receipts, government payments, farm production expenses, etc
