Searching with WinSPIRS Software

Getting Started

  1. Double click on the WinSPIRS icon.
  2. Select the database(s) you want to search from the list in the Choose from these Databases box.
  3. List the database(s) in the Use these Databases box by
    • double clicking on the database(s) or
    • highlighting the database(s) by clicking once, then clicking on >>Add>>. (Hold down the mouse button to select more than one at a time.)
  4. Click on OK, or press enter.
  5. A database description will be displayed. Click on OK or press enter.
Searching
  1. Enter your search in the Search: box.
  2. Your search results will appear in the Search History (second or middle) box.
  3. When your search is complete, citations will be displayed in the bottom box.
Displaying Your Search Results
  1. Use the Page Up and Page Down keys, click on the Next Hit and Previous Hit buttons, or use the mouse to press the arrows or double arrows on the scroll bar to scan through your citations.
  2. Click on All Fields to see the full records. Click on Brief Fields to change back.
  3. Click on Full Screen to view your citations on the full screen instead of the half-screen box. Click on Close Full Screen to change back.
Printing
  1. To print selected citations, click on the book icon (to the left of the citation) for the citations you want to print. A check mark will appear on the book.
  2. When you're ready to print, click on the Print button at the top of the screen.
  3. Click on Options to customize your print. Use Add or Remove to change the fields you want printed in the citation(s). Click on OK.
  4. Click on Print.
Downloading
  1. To download selected citations, click on the book icon (to the left of the citation) for the citations you want to download. A check mark will appear on the book.
  2. When you're ready to download, click on the Download button at the top of the screen.
  3. Specify the drive you want to save your citations to.
  4. Click on Options to customize your file. Use Add or Remove to change the fields you want included in the citation(s). Click on OK.
  5. Click on Download.
  6. You can read or print your file with any word processing program.
Other Features
  • Use Index to check spellings and/or variations of names or terms. You can select items to search from the index.
  • Suggest and Thesaurus can help you find correct subjects.
  • Highlight a line in your search history and click on Show to display the citations for that search.
  • Use Limit to limit your search by date.
  • Retype allows you to correct the spelling of a search term.
  • Clear deletes search lines you don't want.
To Change Databases
  • Click on Database.
To Exit
  • Click on File, then click on Exit.
