SilverPlatter® Networked Databases

The Libraries makes several databases available for searching using SilverPlatter's SPIRS (SilverPlatter Information Retrieval System) software. This software may be downloaded by using the links below.


Operating Systems
    WinSPIRS
      Simply download the version you need and run the executable file.

      The WinSPIRS software for use with Windows requires the following minimum hardware/system configuration:

      • 80486 or higher IBM-compatible PC
      • 16 MB memory
      • VGA monitor
      • 40 MB or larger hard disk
      • Windows 3.11/95/98/NT/XP

    MacSPIRS


      The MacSPIRS software requires the following minimum hardware/system configuration:
      • Macintosh SE
      • 4 MB memory
      • Standard video monitor
      • 20 MB or larger hard disk
      • System 6.0.3 or higher

    The WinSPIRS and MacSPIRS clients will seamlessly login to servers at NDSU, Minitex, and UND to provide access to the databases listed below.

    If you're using the on-campus version, your computer must be directly connected to the campus backbone with a network card and you must have the proper winsock (TCP/IP) or MacTCP driver installed on your computer. (If you already use Netscape, Mosaic, FTP, Telnet or TCP3270/1TN3270 on your computer, you have the required network hardware and software installed.)

    Only selected databases are available from off-campus.

    If you have a notebook computer that's used both on- and off-campus, you'll need to have both versions of the software loaded into different directories on the hard drive.

Database Descriptions


Agricola

    AGRICOLA (Agricultural Online Access) database contains citations to agricultural literature acquired by the National Agricultural Library and cooperating institutions, and subfiles of related subjects, such as food and nutrition, agricultural economics, parasitology, etc., supplied by information centers. Indexes include journal articles and USDA, state experiment station, and US Forest Service publications.


BIOSIS (Biological Abstracts)

    BIOSIS provides comprehensive worldwide coverage of research in the biological and biomedical sciences. The database is the equivalent of Biological Abstracts and includes indexing for more than 350,000 papers each year from nearly 6,000 journals and monograph titles. Nearly every life science discipline is covered, including agriculture, biochemistry, biology, biotechnology, botany, ecology, environment, genetics, medicine, microbiology, neuroscience, nutrition, physiology, and public health.


CAB Abstracts
    CAB INTERNATIONAL indexes over 8500 agriculture-related journals, books, theses, reports, conference proceedings, and annual reports.


SPORT Discus
    SPORTDiscus, a leading database supporting research in sport, fitness, sports medicine, and physical education. SPORTDiscus is international in scope and includes coverate of the following subjects: exercise physiology, biomechanics, sports psychology, training techniques, coaching, physical education, fitness, recreation, sports history, facilities and equipment. The database includes citations to over 47,500 books, conference proceedings, dissertations, and reports. More than 2,000 current journals, magazines, and newsletters are indexed. Approximately 28,000 new references are added each year.


Food Science and Technology Abstracts
    Food Science and Technology Abstracts (FSTA), produced by the International Food Information Service, indexes and abstracts documents related to food science, food technology and human nutrition. FSTA grows by about 2000 new records every month, and it covers journal articles, patents, theses, standards, legislation, some books, and conference proceedings. Areas which relate to food and beverages covered by the database include basic research, new product development, quality assurance, food safety, food composition, regulations, consumer trends, analytical techniques, food biochemistry, food industry engineering, food composition, food processing, microbiology, food storage, transport, and distribution.


INSPEC

    INSPEC contains citations, with abstracts, to worldwide literature in physics, electronics, electrical engineering, computing, control, and information technology. Primary coverage is of journal articles and papers presented at conferences, although significant books, technical reports, and dissertations are also included. The INSPEC database is the electronic equivalent of three printed abstracting journals: Physics Abstracts, Electrical and Electronics Abstracts, and Computer & Control Abstracts. The database contains more than 7 million records, and currently indexes more than 4,200 journals and more than 2,000 conferences. Over 300,000 abstracts are added to INSPEC each year.



Education Index
    Education Index provides citations to articles from 550 of the
    leading publications in the field of education. The information
    covers preschool through college, and comes from English language
    periodicals and yearbooks. Subjects covered by the database include
    athletics, computers, educational technology, funding, language,
    literacy, mathematics, multicultural education, physical education,
    psychology, science, special education, teacher evaluation, and
    vocational education.


Transport

TRANSPORT is a bibliographic database of transportation research information. It is produced by the 25-nation Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), headquartered in Paris, together with the United States' Transportation Research Board (TRB) and the European Conference of Ministers of Transport (ECMT).
