Donating Materials
For
all the valuable and, in some cases, irreplaceable records which have been collected, many
more remain to be preserved, studied, and eventually made available to other interested
scholars in the region. Unfortunately, these priceless materials have all to often been
allowed to disintegrate in dusty attics or damp basements because their historical value
was not known by the individual or community. Only when such resources are accessible to
other citizens of the region can the contributions of an individual or organization be
properly assessed in the context of history. If you are in touch with such primary regional
documents as the diaries, scrapbooks, or letters of North Dakota's people; the historical
records of regional farms or businesses; the memoirs, photographs, films, or sound recordings
of the area's social, civic, and ethnic organizations -- please consider contacting the
Institute staff about conserving them in the best possible manner. We are eager to work with
you in preserving the records of North Dakota's past for North Dakota's future.
For
further information regarding donating organizational records or personal and family papers, the
Institute will be glad to provide a free brochure, published by the Society of American Archivists,
describing the function of an archives, what records to donate, access concerns, and copyright issues. A
brochure, Preserving Your Organization's Records, published by the North Dakota State Historical
Records Advisory Board is available online.
