Biography

John Roberts Haggart was born September 22, 1901 in Fargo, N.D. He graduated from Fargo Central High School in 1919, received his bachelor's degree from Dartmouth Colleg e in 1923, and his master's in business administration from Tuck School of Business in 1924. Mr. Haggart was president of Haggart Construction until 1970, when he closed the business and became a Certified Public Accountant. He had been president of the Associated General Contractors of North Dakota, a member of several service organizations, and the Fargo Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Haggart married Marjory Archer in September 1936, and they had two sons, Gilbert and James. Mr. Haggart died in Fargo on March 19, 1979. Mrs. Haggart was born in Finley, N.D. on December 10, 1911. She graduated from Fargo Central High in 1929, and NDAC in 1933. She later returned to NDSU in 1964 and received a master’s degree in English. She taught English for fourteen years at Fargo Central High School. She passed away January 28, 1988 in Fargo.

Gilbert W. Haggart, father of John Roberts, was born January 18, 1876, and was the first white male child born in the Fargo city limits. He established Haggart Construction Co. in Fargo. He served in the North Dakota State Senate from 1917 to 1920. He died in Fargo in 1967. John Roberts' mother was the former Ruth Roberts, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel G. Roberts, also Fargo pioneers. She graduated from the Fargo public schools, and attended the University of Minnesota. Mrs. Haggart was prominent in social activities for many years, including the Round Table Study Club. She died in 1929.

J. Roberts’ paternal grandfather, John E. Haggart, was a North Dakota U.S. Marshal, Cass County sheriff, and a state senator from 1889 to 1898. His maternal grandfather, Samuel G. Roberts, was involved in the Dakota Territorial Council, and a prominent Fargo lawyer. Both where influential in the locating of the North Dakota Agricultural College at Fargo.

Scope and Content

The J. Roberts Haggart Family Photograph Collection contains professional portraits of family members as well as informal snapshots. Many of the snapshots are in albums. There is also one portrait of Ruth Roberts in an oval frame. The collection was organized into six series: Haggart Family; Samuel G. Roberts Family; Archer-Taisey Family; Portraits; Unidentified, and General.

The Haggart Family Series includes the John E. Haggart family, the Hertsgaard family (Mrs. John E. Haggart's family), Gilbert Woods Haggart family (John E's son), as well as many photograph albums and individual photographs of the J.R. Haggart family (Gilbert's son), and J.Robert's sons, Gilbert & James Haggart. A photograph of the Roberts' home at 1115 S. 8th St. is also included.

Featured in the Samuel G. Roberts Family Series are S.G. Roberts, his family, Ruth Roberts Haggart, and a photograph of the Roberts family grave marker.

The Archer-Taisey Family Series contains albums and snapshots of the family in the early 1900s at Finley, N.D. and numerous photographs of Marjorie Archer Haggart (J. Robert's wife).

In the Portraits Series there are photographs of Calamity Jane, Solomon G. Comstock, Chief Joseph, Dennis Hannifin, Alexander McKenzie, and Ed Patterson among others, as well as tintypes and unidentified adults and children.

The Unidentified Photographs Series contains images of family scenes and Florida scenes, as well as photographs of various groups, and hunting.

The General Photographs Series contains a photograph of Anderson and Bearson Used Cars on 2 nd Ave. North in Fargo, the Rotary Club in 1935, the Masonic Shiloh Lodge #1 from June 1, 1893, a Tom Thumb wedding at Finley, N.D. in 1915, and several of the Morton County Fair in Mandan, N.D.
