History
The Fargo Forum newspaper, published by Forum Publishing of Fargo, has been in continuous publication since 1891, but traces its origins to the Fargo Republican that began publication in 1879. Over the years it has acquired a number of other newspapers published in Fargo , N.D. and Moorhead , Minn. It is now the only daily newspaper in the Fargo-Moorhead area, and its region of coverage extends out into North Dakota and northwest Minnesota.
Scope and Content
The negatives in this collection were taken by the newspaper’s photographers during the period of 1948 to 1958. The purpose was, of course, for possible publication in the Fargo Forum newspaper. Only limited information accompanied the original negatives. All descriptive information and dates found with the negatives was incorporated into this finding aid’s item listing. No prints accompanied this collection when donated. Prints have been made for only a few of the images which have been filed in the Institute’s portrait collection.
To aid in their use, the negatives have been organized into four series: People, Towns, Topical, and Aerials. Within each series they have been arranged alphabetically by descriptive title. Listed first are the 4”x 5” negatives, followed by the 35mm and 120mm negatives.
The images cover a broad spectrum of subject as would be expected for newspaper use. No doubt many were never published, but there is no indication as to which ones were published in the Fargo Forum and which ones were not. Some of the topics documented include North Dakota Governor Fred Aandahl, Baldhill Dam on the Sheyenne River near Valley City, Governor C. Norman Brunsdale, President Dwight D. Eisenhower at the Garrison Dam closure (1953), the early years of the development of the oil industry in the state, Peggy Lee when visiting in North Dakota, the Mandan oil refinery, Nonpartisan League political conventions, President Harry S. Truman in Fargo, and various floods on the Red River and Sheyenne River. There are also numerous images taken in Fargo , including aerials of the Fargo-Moorhead area. Consult the contents listing for additional topics covered by the images.
When processed the contents listing was also re-ordered in subject order. That index is included as part of this finding aid and follows the content listing. |
