General Information

The Institute for Regional Studies since its founding has made the collecting of North Dakota publications a priority, developing an impressive collection of over 5,000 volumes that touch on almost every facet of the state's history. Strengths include North Dakota county, community, church, family, business and organization histories; atlases; periodicals; and works of fiction by North Dakota authors or fiction set in North Dakota. Also available are many titles on microfilm.

Effort is made to seek out titles to enhance our holdings, especially in areas deemed important by students and faculty for both current and future teaching and research. We welcome recommendations for items to purchase as well as new publications.

A separate Lawrence Welk Collection is located at the Institute. It complements the extensive archival holdings at NDSU, documenting one of North Dakota's famous native sons. All publications may be found in the on-line catalog.

Research Tools
The NDSU Libraries on-line catalog ODIN is the primary research tool in finding books and periodicals located at the Institute for Regional Studies.

Access
All books and periodicals are located in the Institute/Archives Research Room where you may retrieve or browse the collection yourself. The books are arranged in the Library of Congress classification system, the same as used at the NDSU Libraries. The reference staff is available to assist in your research needs. Copying facilities are available for both print and microforms. Cost is 10 cents a copy.

Gifts
Gifts of North Dakota related publications are most welcome and appreciated. Donations must be within the scope of the Institute's publications collection policy. All donations are formally acknowledged and gift plates are placed in each publication prior to it being cataloged. Recent donations are also acknowledged on our website. To donate please contact John E. Bye, University Archivist.
