American
Association of University Women, Fargo Branch Records, 1922-1987 (Mss 157)
History
The
Fargo Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) was
formed on January 27, 1922. It was the third branch of the AAUW to
form in North Dakota. The bylaws were adopted March 25 and recognition
was received by the AAUW after April 1, 1922. The original purpose,
as stated in the constitution, was to be "the uniting of college alumnae
for the purpose of carrying on work suggested by the American Association
of University Women, and such local work as is deemed desirable."
The bylaws were revised over the years, and by 1979 the purpose included
"to concentrate and increase their effectiveness in the community for the
solution of social and civic problems."
The
AAUW meeting year runs September through May. Two new study group
topics are adopted each year and usually involve a current affairs issue
(e.g., violence toward women, pollution). The AAUW also sponsored
an annual book fair and a tour of homes to raise money for various local
projects (e.g., educational fellowships, the F-M Community Theater, the
Fargo Public Library). Over the years the AAUW has also been active
in the state and national legislative sessions, lobbying for such issues
as labeling canned goods (1943), ERA (1970's) and abortion rights (1980's).
