Religion
The
Institute has collected and preserved an impressive collection of papers
and records of religious figures, religious orgranizations, and several
churches. The Institute obtained the records of the Congregational
Church of Amenia, the Salem Lutheran Church and the Goshen Moravian church.
The Institute has also obtained the papers of several ministers such as
James P. Schell and Johannes Bonekemper. The Institute continues
to collect and solicit the papers and records of religious figures/leaders,
religious organizations, and churches.

Native of Prussia who became
an ordained minister and spent a great deal of his life preaching to the
people of the Black Sea area in Russia
Congregational
Church of Amenia Records, 1886-1916 (Mss

The people of Amenia started
the church in 1886 when the bonanza farmer E. W. Chaffee donated the land
and also joined the church
Oscar
Elmer Papers, 1869-1901 (Mss
245)
Rev. Elmer became the first
pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Moorhead when it was organized in
1872. He was also instrumental in organizing churches at Fargo, Grand
Forks, Casselton, Wheatland, Tower City, and Mapleton.

a small group of Moravian families, originally from Germany, settled near

Church.
