Religion
The Institute has collected and preserved an impressive collection of papers and records of religious figures, religious orgranizations, and several churches.  The Institute obtained the records of the Congregational Church of Amenia, the Salem Lutheran Church and the Goshen Moravian church.  The Institute has also obtained the papers of several ministers such as James P. Schell and Johannes Bonekemper.  The Institute continues to collect and solicit the papers and records of religious figures/leaders, religious organizations, and churches.

Religion

Johannes Bonekemper Papers, 1802-1856 (Mss 91)
Native of Prussia who became an ordained minister and spent a great deal of his life preaching to the people of the Black Sea area in Russia

Congregational Church of Amenia Records, 1886-1916 (Mss 97)
The people of Amenia started the church in 1886 when the bonanza farmer E. W. Chaffee donated the land and also joined the church

Oscar Elmer Papers, 1869-1901 (Mss 245)
Rev. Elmer became the first pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Moorhead when it was organized in 1872.  He was also instrumental in organizing churches at Fargo, Grand Forks, Casselton, Wheatland, Tower City, and Mapleton.

Fargo-Moorhead Ministerial Association Records, 1931-1967 (Mss 71)
An organization composed of local clegry designed to promote fellowship among its members.

Goshen Moravian Church Records, 1915-1953 (Mss 41)
In the spring of 1878, a small group of Moravian families, originally from Germany, settled near Casselton, North Dakota. On May 24, 1878 they organized the Goshen Moravian Church.

Robert Hovda Papers, 1936-1959 (Mss 1054)
During World War II, Father Hovda was a conscientious objector serving in the Civilian Public Service Camp.

George Mehok Papers, 1922-1994 (Mss 213)
Priest who served the parishes in Fargo, Hope, Aneta and Whapeton, North Dakota until his retirement in 1987.

Bibliographic citations and research notes compiled by Father George J. Mehok regarding Catholicism in Fargo, N.D.

North Dakota School of Religion Records, 1921-1977 (Mss 46)
School located in Fargo providing non-sectarian religious education and eventually absorbed into the NDSU Department of Religion under the supervision of a Professor of Religion.

North Dakota Church History Collection, 1934-1986 (Mss 143)
A collection of material ranging from newspaper clippings to pamphlets on the chruches of North Dakota and a few in Minnesota

Orestes Brownson Study Club No. 3 Records, 1933-1977 (Mss 25)
Study group founded by the women of three Catholic parishes so they could study subjects pertaining to Catholic beliefs and intelligently discuss topics from a Catholic viewpoint.

Salem Lutheran Church Records, 1898-1958 (Mss 2)
Lutheran Church originally located in Moorhead, Minnesota before its members moved it to its present site south of Fargo along U.S. Highway 81.

James P. Schell Papers, 1869-1961 (Mss 96)
Reverend who served many of the churches in the Red River Valley who wrote In the Ojibway Country as well as other historical manuscripts.

Wesley Methodist Church Records, 1894-1942 (Mss 12)
The records of the Methodist Church in Hillsboro North Dakota that is now a member of the Hillboro United Parish

Women's Society of Christian Service Records, 1918-1989 (Mss 202)
Women's church group who used chicken pie suppers to pay off the debt incurred during the construction of their church.
