Treadwell
Twichell was born on November 19, 1864 in Hastings, Minnesota. At
age 17, he moved to Mapleton, ND to manage the land holdings of his late
father. In 1895 and 1897 he served in the North Dakota House of Representatives
and in 1899 served in the North Dakota Senate. In 1908 he ran for
Governor, but was defeated in the primary. Treadwell again served
in the ND House (1913) and ND Senate (1915). During his political
career he earned the reputation of a reformer and opponent to boss rule
in politics. Luther Lathrop Twichell was born at Hastings, Minnesota,
on September 13, 1872. Mr. Twichell graduated from high school and
the University of Minnesota School of Law. In 1912, Mr. Twichell
was elected to the North Dakota House of Representatives where he served,
except for the 1917 session, continuously until his retirement in 1944.
He also served as Speaker in 1921.
The
collection contains papers relating mainly to the brother's political careers.
Treadwell's papers contain mainly newspaper clippings and are divided by
subject. Luther's papers contain correspondence relating to his career
as a lawyer and subject files containing newspaper clippings regarding
his political career.
