The
Soule Family had its beginnings with Nathan Soule who was born in August
1790 in Duchess County, New York. He had three sons Ambrose L., Charles
E. and J. M. Soule and his family lived in Michigan and his son,
George, lived in Minnesota and North Dakota. George fled to Mexico
because he embezzeled funds from the railroad and wished to escape prosecution.
Little is known what happened to the Soule Family after 1914.
The
collection consists of letters, ledgers, a diary, an obituary, and a map.
The letters contain letters written by Ambrose while serving in the Civil
War and by George while he was in Mexico (letters date 1900-1910).
The map (circa 1897) is of free government lands along the Minneapolis,
St Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Railroad in Ward County, North Dakota. The
ledgers are written by George Soule when he worked for the railroad at
Russia and Crookston, Minnesota (1885-1888) and Harvey, North Dakota (1888-1900).
