.4 linear feet (Mss 1053)
The
John F. Reynolds Post No. 44 was organized on February 22, 1884 in Fargo
with 64 charter members. Membership in the Corps of the Grand Army
of the Republic was open to men who had fought in Union forces of the Civil
War. With statehood in 1889, the Posts were renumbered with the Reynold
Post becoming Number 5. The Post had a membership of 287 at one time
but declined until its demise in the 1930's. Its last member was
Col. John W. Carroll who died March 3, 1942.
The
John F. Reynolds Post No. 5 records consist of meeting minutes, a financial
ledger, and subject files. The meeting minutes cover only the period
of 1898 to 1911 but are very complete for that period. The subject
files include miscellaneous papers to include lists of deceased members
and those buried at Riverside Cemetery in Fargo.
