Literary, Music and Theater
Preserving the papers of North Dakota literary figures has been a priority of the Institute since its founding. It has amassed a unique collection of papers and records relating to the literary heritage of the region. Later it became active in documening the region's music, musical organizations, and theater.

Bachelors and Benedicts Dance Club (Accession 2541, unprocessed)
Fargo-Moorhead dance club dating back to 1898, with records documenting its activities from 1964 to 1998.

Ben Barrett Papers, 1889-1984 (Mss 255)
Extension agent in Emmons County, N. D. from 1934 to 1959 who wrote about his life as an agent and early farmer.

Jack Beeching Manuscripts, 1960s (Mss 94)
English born poet who was at NDSU during the 1965-66 academic year and worked on his manuscript The Dakota Project.

Richard Critchfield Papers, 1953-1986 (Mss 156 and Cassette tapes 255-330) North Dakota native who enjoyed a successful career as a journalist and author covering the Third World.  This collection is primarily drafts for his widely acclaimed book Those Days: An American Album that documents his own family history.

Richard Critchfield Papers, 1954-1994 (Mss 206 and 1 video cassette)
Second donation of Critchfield's papers.  It includes many of his published articles as well as drafts for many of his other books including Villagers.

Dakota Arts Quarterly Records, 1978-1984 (Mss 152)
Literary journal that showcased writers and writngs from the Upper Midwest, edited by Rodney Nelson.

Fargo-Moorhead Area Music Club Records, 1897-1984 (Mss 140)
Organized in November 1894 to promote the study of music in the Fargo-Moorhead area.

Edwin Fissinger Papers, 1948-1990 (Mss 226)
Professor of Music at North Dakota State University and nationally recognized as a composer and editor of choral music.

Stella Hohncke Papers, 1930-1976 (Mss 165)
Fargo, North Dakota poet and editor.

Agnes Bishop Jardine Papers, 1920-1926, 1933-1939 (Mss 20)
North Dakotan deeply involved in music clubs on the local and national levels and served as President of the National Federation of Music Clubs.

Vera Kelsey Papers, 1944-1958 (Mss 11)
Accomplished journalist and author, with this collection documenting her last four books.

Lake Agassiz Arts Council Records, 1968-1998 (Mss 221)
Created to promote the arts in the Fargo-Moorhead community and administer a granting program.

Richard Lyons Papers, 1940-1976 (Mss 10)
North Dakota State University English professor and poet.

Richard Lyons Papers, 1938-1982 (Mss 151)
North Dakota State Univeristy English professor and poet. This collection, donated upon his retirement, documents his literary career.

Richard Lyons Papers, 1936-1997 (Mss 259)
NDSU English professor, retired to Maine. These papers, the final installment of his papers and his career, focus on his poetry, both historical collections and more recent works done prior to his death in 2000.

Thomas McGrath Papers, 1970-1971 (Mss 237)
Renowned poet, Rhodes Scholar and Sheldon, North Dakota native.

Nora Mohberg Papers, 1955-1958 (Mss 283)
Mohberg was a North Dakota author of historical fiction related to her Norwegian American family.

The Movie at the End of the World: Thomas McGrath audiovisual material, 1980-1981 (Acc. 2598)
Field recordings made by Mike Hazard and Paul Burtness of The Center for International Education in the production of a documentary on the life and poetry of Thomas McGrath.

Rodney Nelson Papers, 1971-1990 (Mss 229)
Fargo, North Dakota native who served as editor for Dakota Arts Quarterly and published a number of literary works.

A collection of North Dakota related sheet music.

North Dakota State University Folklore Collection, 1978-1985 (Mss 146)
A compilation of folklore related to North Dakota and western Minnesota, collected by students in the Anthropology 212 class at North Dakota State University.

Ole A. Olson Papers, 1950s-1968, 1980 (Mss 79)
Ole A. Olson was a North Dakota poet and writer.

Clarence S. Putnam Papers, 1899-1952 (Mss 24)
A collection complied by the Institute staff from various sources to honor the former medical doctor turned music instructor at the North Dakota Agricultural College.

Grace Brown Putnam Papers, 1944-1953 (Mss 110)
New York native and University of North Dakota graduate who was a school teacher and editor of  Prairie Wings, the official publication of the North Dakota Poetry Society.

Aagot Raaen Papers, 1915-1953 (Mss 8)
North Dakota pioneer school teacher, Hatton, N.D. native, and later superintendent of Steele County schools, avid traveler and author.

Records of an area organization established to promote watermedia art through education, achievement, and support.

John Remme Papers, 1955-1991 (Mss 191)
Fargo, North Dakota native who went to New York to pursue a stage career and appeared in Broadway plays before writing and starring in many other plays.

Erling Rolfsrud Papers, 1948-1968 (Mss 64)
North Dakota native and prolific writer, especially of historical topics. This collection documents his early literary works.

North Dakota native and prolific writer, especially of historical topics. This collection documents his entire career as an author and educator.

Rudy Rudd Scrapbook, 1911-1930 (Mss 1518)
Fargo musician involved in local and national dance bands in the 1920s and 1930s documented in his scrapbook of photographs, clippings and mementoes. Includes information on the local Red Jackets band, the Collegians band on the S.S. President McKinley on 1925 trip to the Far East, and other national bands and musicians. (No finding aid)

Prudence Gearey Sand Papers, 1918-1955 (Mss 230)
Fargo native with longtime association with the National League of American Pen Women and poetry writer.

Frank and Audrey Scott Papers, 1901-1996 (Mss 195)
Frank and Audrey Scott were Fargo, North Dakota natives. He arranged and wrote music for television shows including the Lawerence Welk Show, and later had his own band at Palm Desert, California. Audrey Remme Scott was a singer and entertainer. A recent accesion includes all his arrangements for his own band.

Zdena Trinka Papers, 1940s, 1949 (Mss 3)
North Dakota native and author who escaped the Nazi invasion of Czechoslovakia while on an official visit.

Nicholas Vrooman, Vrooman Archive of Turtle Mountain Chippewa, 1980-1993 (Mss 215)
Vrooman was the folklorist for the State of North Dakota and this collection documents his work collecting information from the Turtle Mountain Chippewa regarding their folklore.

Anne Walters Papers, 1910-1984 (Mss 171)
A prized playwright and dramatist from Webster, North Dakota who wrote several full length plays and books.

Grace V. Watkins Papers, 1921-1960 (Mss 233)
Fargo teacher and musician who was also a prolific writer and member of the National League of American Pen Women.

Lawrence Welk
NDSU was named the repository for the musical arrangements, scrapbooks and other records documenting one of America's most well known band leaders.
