Charles
Fremont Amidon was born on August 17, 1856 at Clymer, New York. He
attended high school at Corry, Pennsylvania and after two years of teaching
entered Hamilton College in Clinton, New York in 1878. After graduating
in 1882, he came to Fargo, Dakota Territory and served as prinicipal of
the high school. A year later, Amidon entered the law firm of Thomas
and Benton as a clerk. After earning his law degree, Amidon served
as city attorney and as a member of the law firm until 1896 when President
Grover Cleveland appointed him United States District Judge for North Dakota.
During his time on the bench, Amidon wrote nearly 150 opinions--many of
them influential as precedents.
The
collection consists of copies of correspondence, and various subject files
collected by Professor Kenneth Smemo of Moorhead State University while
writing a paper on Judge Amidon. Much of the material comes from
the Amidon collection of the Orin G. Libby Manuscript Collection of the
University of North Dakota.
