Wallace Petrie was born on December 27, 1862 in Fulton New York.  At the age of 12 he moved with his parents to Michigan and later received business training at Valparasio University.  In 1886, Mr. Petrie went to Emmons County, where he filed a homestead near Dry Lake and in 1893 established a ranch on East Beaver Creek near Linton.  Mr. Petrie started a store in Linton, W. E. Petrie Store, that remained in operation until 1953.

The collection includes material on homesteading in Dakota Territory, his sister's ranch, the brochure Central Dakota by Orange Judd, Emmons County history, FIDAC pagent, 1890 medical remedies, 1904-1906 school examinations and Petrie family clippings.
