Iver was born on April 21, 1839 in Oens, Smedstrop, Denmark.  At the age of 16 he went to the sea and for the next twelve years sailed all over the world.  On June 17, 1871 he immigrated to America.  In 1878 he homesteaded in Wheatland Township, Cass County, Dakota Territory.

The collection is a manuscript of Madson's recollections, dictated to his daugher, concerning his twelve years at sea, four years in New Zealand, immigration to America from Denmark, and farming in Minnesota before homesteading in Dakota Territory.  The collection also includes newspaper clippings on the Madson family.
