George
Lamphere was born August 23, 1845 at Mystic, Connecticut. He enlisted
in 1862 to fight in the Civil War until he was wounded in the arm and captured
in April 1864 at Plymouth, North Carolina. After leaving the civil
service, Mr. Lamphere moved to Moorhead, Minnesota and worked in real estate
and insurance until he purchased Moorhead Daily News in 1883.
Mr. Lamphere ws the author
of numerous articles and in 1880 published a book, The United States
Government. The collection includes two manuscripts, an account
of Mr. Lamphere's 1917 trip east (incomplete), and a photostate copy of
Experiences
and Observations of a Private Soldier in the Civil War. He also briefly edited the Palouse Republic, the newspaper of Palouse,
Washington.
