Ben Barrett was born in Steele County. After graduating from the North Dakota Agricultural College he served an an extension agent in Cavalier and Emmons counties, N.D.

The His papers are primarily manuscripts of his many historical and autobiographical writings on his youth, at North Dakota Agricultural College and as a county agent.
