Records, 1912-1956
(Mss 65)
1.6 linear feet
When
Pierce County was organized in 1889, the first act of the County Commission
was to organize the county into nine school districts. Elverum township
was organized into two school districts with three schools. In 1913
the three districts combined into one and became Scandia School District
#22. The school housed grades 1-8, plus a four year high school program.
The high school was absorbed into the Rugby school system in 1956 and the
remaining grades were absorbed into the Rugby system in 1970.
The
collection consists of school board minutes, correspondence, financial
records, clerks' records and various subject files for a school district
composed of German-Russians and Norwegian-Americans. Also includes
a paper by Walden Duchsher, "A Study of Educational Differences in a German-Russian
- Norwegian Community." The records also give a good picture of the
district's financial difficulties in the 1930's depression.
