John
Halland was born on November 26, 1863 in Trondhjem, Norway. He came
with his parents to America in 1865 and settled in Northwood, Iowa.
Mr. Halland attended and graduated from Luther College in 1884. He
then attended Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri from 1884 to 1887
and later Valparasio University and the Chicago School of Psychology.
In 1896, Mr. Halland became Superintendent of Public Instruction in North
Dakota and was re-elected in 1898. From 1902 to 1910, he was professor
of history and social sciences at North Dakota Agricultural College.
Mr. Halland died on January 13, 1938.
The
collection consists of correspondence, mainly during superintendency from
family and son Herman while at the US Naval Academy. Correspondents
include UND President Webster Merifield. There are also other miscellaneous
subject files.
