The
Fargo Retired Teachers Association began in September 1955 as the Fargo
Retired Teachers Club, a social club for women teachers who retired from
the Fargo school system. Once North Dakota established a retired
teachers association, the Fargo club affiliated itself with the state association.
A new constitution in 1966 changed the name to Fargo Retired Teachers Association
and expanded membership to anyone 55 or older who had served as a teacher
in the schools of the nation at any level.
The
collection consists of the constitution, meeting minutes (1959-1983), scrapbooks
(1955-1980) documenting its activities and members, newsletters, and biographical
files on Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, founder of the National Retired Teachers
Association and Sadie Walker.
