Fargo Urban
Renewal-Fourth Street
Records, 1955-1968, 1971
12.8 linear feet (Mss 22)
 Since
1875, the downtown area of Fargo served as the city's commercial center.
Over the years, the downtown area of Fourth Street to the Red River stagnated
thus becoming a place of deteriorated buildings and vacant lots.
in 1958, Fargo received nearly three million dollars in federal funding
to rejuvinate the downtown area. Once the project was finished, the
area housed the new Civic Center and a new public library.
 The
collection contains meeting minutes, correspondence, applications, supporting
documents, subject files, financial records, maps and other material relating
to land acquisition, property management, relocation of families and businesses,
and land dispositions in projects partially funding by U.S. Housing and
Home Finance Agency. Separated materials include an extensive collection
of photographs of the urban renewal sites.
