In order to meet the demand of Fargo businesses for a bridge across the Red River, a committee was formed in 1881 to discuss the proposal with the proper authorities in Cass (ND) and Clay (MN) Counties as well as the city of Moorhead (MN).  Once the bridge location was determined, the plan called for two bridges-one connecting Front Street in Fargo with Main Street in Moorhead and the other the Northern Pacific Avenue Bridge.  Money for the bridges came from the selling of bonds and subscriptions.  Both bridges opened in 1884.

The Bridge Series files contain the subscription lists for the construction of the bridges, various allowances for payment of construction, minutes of the joint bridge committee and related correspondence.  It also contains some interesting letterheads and early maps of Fargo-Moorhead.  The records have been divided by bridge project and chronologically therein.
