Cass County
(N. D.) Marriage Licenses
Marriage Licenses, 1877-1944
41 linear feet (Mss 253)
Marriage licenses were not required by Dakota Territory law and it was not until 1887 when federal law
required marriage licenses be issued. The first session of the North Dakota State Legislature
passed a law that required a marriage license be obtained from the court.
From 1877 and into 1886 the marriage certificates consisted only of a written statement
by the person performing the wedding.
The marriage licenses at the Institute span the period of the late 1870s
to July 1944. Licenses after July1944 are maintained by the Cass
County Treasurer, 211 9th Street South, Fargo ND 58103.
A database to all names in the records has been developed and available on the Institute web site.
