Because the grounds for divorce were liberal and residency requirement no more than 90 days, many people from Eastern states, Canada and even overseas, came to North Dakota to obtain a relatively fast divorce. After 1899 residency was changed to one year. Case files include all legal documents filed with the court, testimony, depositions, final decrees and occasionally evidence such as photographs, letters and artifacts.
