Business
The
Institute has collected and preserved an impressive collection business
records and the personal papers of business owners. The business
records range from a general store to an electric company. The Institute
continues to solicit and is interested in acquiring additional documents
on businesses in North Dakota and business owners.
Frank
L. Anders Papers, 1822-1965 (Mss 1417)
Served as Fargo City Engineer,
and secretary and construction engineer of the North Dakota State Capitol
Commission which oversaw the construction of the state capitol. Also
a Medal of Honor recipient.

Herman
Eisenlohr Papers, 1912-1935 (Mss 23)
Iowa native who became
a Larimore, ND veterinarian and operated a livery stable and kept very
detailed records regarding his business.
Herbst
Department Store Records, 1891-1979 (Mss 158)
Started by Issac Herbst
in 1891 as a dry goods store, Herbst's survived several fires and continually
expanded with stores in Bismarck, Devils Lake, Jamestown and West Acres
Shopping Center in Fargo in the 1970s. The store went out of business
in 1982.

Swedish immigrant who became
a Fargo inventor and maufacturer who developed a high pressure grease gun
and an electric snow shovel.

Dakota Business Literature Collection (Mss 168)
A collection assembled
by the Institute staff in a continuing project of organizing a collection
of a diverse group of material relating to manufacturing and other product-oriented
businesses in North Dakota.
Northern
School Supply Records, 1918-1998 (Mss
197)
Locally owned school supply
company that once had stores and warehouses in Portland, Oregon and Great
Falls, Montana. Co-founder Walter L. Stockwell was on Hitler's enemy
list due to his membership in the Masons.
Northern
States Power-Fargo Branch Records, 1882, 1930-1976 (Mss
205)
Began as the Fargo Electric
Light and Power Company in 1882 and underwent several mergers with local
rivals until being bought out by Northern States Power, a Minneapolis,
Minnesota based company.
Thorvald
Ostbye Family Papers, 1884-1947 (Mss 325)
Norwegian immigrant who
started a contracting business and became a successful Fargo contractor.
Responsible for building the Carnegie Library (Putnam Hall) and its addition
on the North Dakota Agricultural College (now North Dakota State University).
John
R. Ostfield Papers, 1928-1951 (Mss 1143)
Canadian who practiced
at the State Hospital in Jamestown, ND before coming to Fargo and opening
a private practice on Broadway.
Thomas
Putnam Family Papers, 1868-1955 (Mss 179)
New York native who moved
with family to Iowa before coming to Carrington, ND in 1886. Owned
a successful lumber business as well as 29 farms and two sections of land
near Calgary, Alberta.
Ransom
County Trust Company Records, 1899-1949 (unprocessed)
The Company was established
in Sheldon, ND in 1888 and incorporated in 1899 as the Ransom County Immigrant
Association. The collection consists primarily of over 6,000 case
files of mainly land and farm mortgage transactions handled by the firm
from 1899 to circa 1930.

C. Reineke Papers, 1929-1965 (Mss 6 and Mss 1556)
Fargo native who turned
his interests in radios into a business and became the founder of WDAY
radio. His wife was dance school operator and a professional
model in New York City.
