The Sanborn Map Company of New York City, beginning in 1867, produced maps of American cities and towns, giving detailed, accurate information about their buildings and other structures. These maps were originally designed to assist fire agents in determining the degree of hazard associated with a particular property. The entire collection of Sanborn maps for North Dakota is available on microfilm, spanning from 1884 to 1951. In addition the Institute has the original Fargo volumes of the 1922 edition (Mss 1565), and the 1929 edition (Mss 1563)which includes supplements dating from 1931 to 1956.
