S. Marius
Houkom's architecture career in Fargo spanned from circa 1920 to his retirement in 1978.
He was a partner with Joseph E. Rosatti and later with Ole A. Braseth until establishing
his own firm during World War II. Herman Skaret later became his associate. During his
career he designed seventy-eight churches as well as several homes, schools, athletic
facilities, hospitals and commercial buildings. Some of his Fargo projects included
Plymouth Congregational Church, Peace Lutheran Church, Grace Lutheran Church, the
original Island Park swimming pool, and the Bentson-Bunker Fieldhouse. His last
project was the El Zagal Clubhouse in Fargo.
The
architectural files include both the blueprints and other drawings as well as the
supporting correspondence, and specifications and financial documents. The collection
documents his entire career quite well. In addition there are his files while serving
on the North Dakota State Board of Architecture dealing primarily with certifying architects
to practice in North Dakota.
