William
L. Dickinson was born in Moire, New York and after graduating high school
in 1895 moved west to join his parents. In 1905 he and his father
started the L. J. Dickinson and Son clothing store in Dickinson.
After
selling the store in 1913, Dickinson operated a ranch near Cooke, Montana,
which he turned into a dude ranch. He sold the ranch in 1925 and
purchased the Current-Heffron Abstract Company of Dickinson, later called
the Dickinson
