James
B. Power was born on August 20, 1833 at Stockport, New York. In 1875
he purchased 6,000 acres of land near Leonard, North Dakota and called
it the Helendale Stock Farm. Power served as Land Commissioner of
the St. Paul and Manitoba (Great Northern) until his resignation in 1885.
From 1883 to 1895, he became acting president of the North Dakota Agricultural
College.
The
papers consist of correspondence, financial and legal papers, and subject
files. The correspondence consists almost exclusively of Mr. Power's
letterpress books of outgoing correspondence. The legal material
includes property deeds and abstracts and legal briefs from several ND
court cases related mainly to conflicts in property ownership. The
subject files contain many speeches given by Mr. Power.
