Stephen Downing grew up in Eire, ND and first worked as an examiner for the Insurance Company of North America.  In 1911, he moved to his father's bonanza farms, the Downing Farm at Mooreton and LaMoure, North Dakota and oversaw the the work of the superintendents.

The farms were sold in 1943 due to financial difficulties and Downing and his family moved to Fargo.  He then worked at the Powers Hotel until his retirement in 1950.
