Interlibrary loan copyright policy: articles

The Interlibrary Loan Office at NDSU Libraries adheres to the lawful use of copyrighted materials through procedures that are based upon the CONTU Guidelines.  For article requests, these guidelines recommend the "Rule of Five": a library can not request more than five articles from a particular journal or periodical within a calendar year.  This rule applies only to articles that are published less than five years from the request date; articles that are more than five years old are exempt.

For article requests that exceed the Rule of Five, Interlibrary Loan may be able to obtain a limited number of additional requests per journal title by paying royalties to the Copyright Clearance Center.  The Interlibrary Loan staff will notify patrons if there is a copyright issue with their request, and will provide options to obtain the requested material.  If you have any questions concerning the copyright policy, please contact the Interlibrary Loan Office at 231-8885.
