Obituary of Dr. George K. Epp

George Epp was born on October 26, 1924, in Nikolaipol, Ukraine. His parents were Kornelius and Maria Epp. He immigrated to Paraguay via Germany in 1947, and married Agnes Froese a year later. In 1950 he was baptized by Bishop Hans Epp.

George and Agnes immigrated to Canada in 1954 and established a happy home in Winnipeg. George was hired by the University of Manitoba Chemistry Department, where he worked as a lab technician and technical glass blower. Sons, Werner and Harold were born in 1956 and 1962.

While working full time, George continued his academic studies, after which he worked at both of the Mennonite Bible Colleges and at the Universities of Manitoba and Winnipeg. He served as pastor of the Douglas Mennonite Church and finished his career at Menno Simons College. Then following several happy years of retirement, during which he dedicated himself to historical research.

After a courageous battle with cancer, he died peacefully on October 25, one day short of his 73rd birthday. As a family, we are very thankful for the special care our husband and father received from Dr. Martens and the staff at Concordia Hospital. Preceding him in death are his parents Kornelius and Maria Epp, a brother Hans who died as a child, his brother Kornelius Epp and a sister Maria Guenter. He is survived by his brother Peter and many nieces and nephews.

His passing is mourned by his wife Agnes, son Werner and wife Edith, granddaughters Rebecca and Lydia, and son Harold.

Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 29 at 10:00 a.m. at the Springfield Heights Mennonite Church with interment in Glen Eden Memorial Gardens. Viewing at the church prior to the service.
