Dr. Timothy J. Kloberdanz, class instructor.
He is a cultural anthropologist and folklorist who has published
extensively on the Germans from Russia. Dr. Kloberdanz has been
teaching the class since 1976.
Guest lecturer Ron Vossler of the
University of North Dakota (Grand Forks, North Dakota). His
lecture topic: "Prairie Spass: Humor of the German-Russians."
Students in the "Germans
from Russia" class sample the foods before the start of Ron
Vossler's lecture.
Pickled watermelon and pickled red beets were
prepared by Darvin and Judy Hauff. The recipes are by way of
the Bessarabia German colonies.
"Käsknepfla" (Cheese Buttons or
Cheese Dumplings).
"Blachinda" (baked pumpkin turnovers), a Black
Sea German favorite that may be of Rumanian origin. These pastries
were prepared at a bakery in Linton, North Dakota.
"Bratwurst" and ring bologna from
the German-Russian community of Wishek, North Dakota.
