St. James Church
Rachel (Janke) Schmidt’s mother was laid to rest at St. James Cemetery. Her funeral service was held at the rural church.

Courting
Arthur E. Schmidt courted Rachel (Janke) Schmidt for nearly two years before marrying her. The young couple is photographed here at a Luther Legion Picnic.

Haying
Arthur E. Schmidt remembers haying as a young lad near Gackle. He recalls using a pitch fork to load the wagon. According to him, he never had to haul hay further than a mile.
