The Bessarabiendeutscher Verein was founded 1949 and is a society primarily of persons of Bessarabian German ancestry. Today these former German villages are in southwestern part of Ukraine (near Odessa) and in Moldova. The society presents a large gathering every two years now near Stuttgart. Reunions of persons from specific Bessarabian German villages are held throughout Germany. Announcements of these events are listed in Mitteilungsblatt.

Haus der Bessarabiendeutschen
The Verein is owner of a six floor building. This location is within four walking blocks of the Landsmannschaft der Deutschen aus Russland.

Bessarabian German Gathering
The Landsmannschaft sponsors a gathering for the Bessarabian Germans community in Germany every two years normally in May or June. For schedule information, please contact the Landsmannschaft or consult Mitteilungsblatt.

Mitteilungsblatt
Semi-monthly newspaper, published by the Bessarabiendeutscher Verein. For a subscription, please contact the office of the Verein.

Membership to the Landsmannschaft
With a subscription to Mitteilungsblatt, one becomes a member of the Bessarabiendeutscher Verein.

The Hilfskomitee was founded 1946 and represents the Bessarabian Germans on religious and social areas.

The Alexander-Stift was founded 1953 and is a home for the elderly as well as a nursing home with assisted living units. The house is committed to the perservation of the Bessarabian traditions especially by presenting Bessarabian cooking, church services, events and celebrations.

The Heimatmuseum was founded 1952 and is housed since 1960 in the building Haus der Bessarabiendeutschen. The society's greatest strength is museum exhibition, archives, library and genealogy.

Museum Exhibition
The Heimatmuseum collects and presents originals, models and artifacts of the Germans in Bessarabia during the period of settlement from 1814 to 1940.

Archives and Library
In the archives there is a collection of photographies, documents and other papers corresponding to all former German villages in Bessarabia.

The library has the most extensive Bessarabian German book collection in the world. No interlibrary loan.

Persons can work in archive and library but should contact the Heimatmuseum by phone for hours.

Genealogical and Family Research
The Heimatmuseum provides limited genealogical research with help of volunteer staff. Extensive genealogy records are available from the LDS Bessarabian microfilm collection and from the Central Genealogical Archive in Leipzig.

The cost for genealogical and family history research is $3 U.S. per hour.

The Heimatmuseum der Deutschen aus Bessarabien appreciates gifts of family histories and other Bessarabian German publications in the English language as donation to its library collection.

Bookstore and Book Sale
The Heimatmuseum has an extensive list of books for sale. Heimatmuseum publications are also available for purchase from the Germans from Russia Heritage Collection.

Publications
Museum und Archiv is a booklet published since 1993 with reports from the Heimatmuseum documentation of the history of the Bessarabian Germans.

Schriften des Heimatmuseums der Deutschen aus Bessarabian is a series of monographies and documentation.

  • Volume 35: Plotzk in Bessarabien 1839-1940, published in 1998.
  • Volume 36: Kisil, ein Schwabendorf in Bessarabien, published in 1999.
  • Volume 37: Bessarabesken (Erzählungen), published in 2000.

Membership to the Heimatmuseum
The cost for membership is 50 Euro, which does not include the fee for change and/or bank transfer.
