The study of physics commences with the beginning of the university. One of the original departments in the first catalog (1892) was the Department of Mathematics and Physics. By 1894 it was the Department of Mechanics and Physics and in 1905 the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Physics. For the 1907-1908 bulletin, physics was listed as a course of study in the Department of Engineering. As of the 1908-1909 bulletin, the Division of Physics was established. In 1922 the Department of Physics was in place and has remained so through the present.
