Harold Goetz was born December 20, 1932 in Halliday, ND. He received his A.S. from the North Dakota School of Forestry in 1958, his B.S. in 1960 and M.S. in 1963, both in botany, from NDSU and his Ph.D. in grasslands management from Utah State in 1968. He was a Fulbright Fellow at Hohenheim University in West Germany (1960-1961).
Prior to coming to NDSU, he was a Range Conservationist for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Nebraska. He joined the NDSU faculty in 1964. He took leave in 1973-1974 to served as a consultant with the Food and Agricultural Organization of United Nations. In 1974 he was appointed Director of Tri-College University Center of Environmental Studies. From 1976–1985 he was Chair of Botany Department. In 1983 he was honored with the prestigious Blue Key Doctor of Service Award. In 1985 he left NDSU to become the Chair of Animal and Range Sciences Department at Colorado State University.
