Dr. Gruber was born on February 10, 1935 in Hershey, Pennsylvania. He received his bachelor's in Chemistry from Haverford College (Haverford, PA ) in 1957 and his PhD. in Chemical Physics from UC-Berkeley in 1961. Dr, Gruber joined NDSU as the Dean of Science and Mathematics in 1975. Prior to coming to NDSU, he was a professor at Washington State University since 1966, where he also served as Dean of the Graduate School. From 1964-1966 he served as part of a four-man team for NASA dealing with scientific experiments in physics for U.S. moon landings. He left NDSU in 1980 to accept the position of Vice President for Academic Affairs at Portland State University.
