Biography
 

Dr. James M. Sugihara was born in Las Animas, Colorado in 1918. He received his bachelor's in Chemistry at UC-Berkeley in 1939 and his doctorate in chemistry from the University of Utah in 1947. He joined the faculty of the University of Utah that same year, rising to the rank of professor in 1955. He came to NDSU in 1964 as Dean of the College of Chemistry and Physics, which became the College of Science and Mathematics in 1973. He was named Dean of the Graduate School and Director of Research in 1974. In 1984 he held joint administrative appointments when he was named interim Vice President for Academic Affairs. In 1985-1986 he was named interim Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics. He was interim Director of Student Academic Affairs from 1987-1988, awarded Professor Emeritus status in 1998, and named interim Chair of Polymers and Coating for 1990-1991.

He was a member of the 1978 U.S. Department of Energy Delegation that visited Moscow, Leningrad, and Volvogard to meet with Russian oil experts on geochemistry. He was a consultant for Sun Oil Company, Exxon Oil Company, American Gilsonite Company, and the National Science Foundation.

He was honored with the Blue Key Doctor of Service Award in 1972 and NDSU gave him an honorary doctorate in December 1998.
